Roar: HHS is fast at Havre Lions Invite

Pony track teams notch solid finishes at the Havre Middle School Track

Injuries and weather are two things that can often affect track season in the spring in Montana. And unfortunately, the Havre track team has had to deal with both, but especially injuries.

Yet, despite being less than full strength, the Ponies hosted the annual Havre Lions Invitational this past Saturday at the Havre Middle School track and even at less than 100 percent, HHS put together some solid performances.

Havre did not take home the team title in either the boys or girls competitions, but both teams did manage to finish second. Malta won the girls meet with 142 points, 25 points ahead of the HHS girls, which finished second with 117. Belt was third with 79, while North Star and Chinook, were fourth and fifth with 50 and 44 points, respectively.

In the boys meet, things were much closer. Fairfield ended up sneaking out a narrow victory over Havre, finishing with 77 points, compared to 74 points for the Pony boys. Third place went to Belt with 62 points, while Box Elder was fourth with 45. Conrad was finished fifth with 45 and Harlem was sixth with 38.

“The kids really competed hard. We have had some injury issues, this was our third meet in seven days and that’s tough,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “But we had some really great performances today.”

En route to their second-place showing, the Pony girls got some solid performances, but none were more impressive than Naomi Terry, who won both the 100-meter dash and the 200. Terry took home the 100 finals with a time of 12.8, then won the 200 with a time of 26.7.

“Naomi had a great day for us,” Ita said. “She ran both the 100 and the 200 and she ran really well for us today.”

Havre also had a few other first-place finishers as Rachel David took home an individual title in the 800 with a time of 2:35. Kristen Nash won the discus with a throw of 97-7 and Amelia Beard tied for first in the pole vault with a vault of 7-6. Havre also won the 1,600 relay, thanks to a team that consisted of Logan Huebsch, Megan Erickson, Rachel David and Ireland Coyne.

Erickson, Coyne and Huebsch also had productive days outside of the relay. As an individual, Erickson finished third in the 800 and followed that up by taking home fourth in the 1,600. Coyne placed in multiple events, finishing second in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 200. Huebsch also finished third in both the 100 hurdles and long jump.

Beard was another Havre athlete that had a stellar day. In addition to her strong showing in the pole vault, she also placed third in the triple jump. Other Havre girls who placed included Megan Whitford, who was fourth in the 400, Loni Waid, who was third in the pole vault, Kaylee Nystrom, who was fifth in the pole vault and Sarah Faber, who finished fifth in the high jump.

More than the girls team, the boys team was limited due to injuries. Sprinter Michael Loftus, who normally scores points in the sprints wasn’t able to compete and that left the Ponies a little thin in terms of depth.

However, Havre still managed some stellar performances led by Ivar Aageson, who took home the individual crown in the pole vault with a height of 12-0. Nate Rismon of Havre finished third in the pole vault by vaulting 11-0. Rismon also notched a second-place finish in the 200 with a time of 23.30.

Rismon was also part of a 1,600 relay team for the Ponies that took first as he, Jacob LaBrie, Aageson and Luke Karnauskas beat the rest of the competition by nearly 10 seconds as HHS posted a time of 3:38.1. LaBrie and Karnauskas also did well in the open 800 as LaBrie came in third and Karnauskas finished fifth.

The Ponies also got plenty of points in the jumping events from Nik Keller and in the throwing events from Thomas Keith. Keller placed in all three jumping events, finishing second in the long jump, second in the high jump and sixth in the long jump.

“Nik Keller had a great day in the jumps,” Ita said. “Some of your young jumpers are finally starting to get it figured out and starting to figure out their steps and when we get some of them healthier, we will be in good shape.”

Like Keller, Keith placed in all three throwing events, notching a fourth-place finish in the shot put. He also came in fifth place in the javelin and sixth in the discus.

“Thomas did a great job today in the throwing events,” Ita said. “He placed in all three of them. So he is really starting to figure things out there and that is really good to see.”

Havre will be back in action Thursday, when the Ponies will host a triangular with Chinook and North Star at the Havre Middle School track. The meet will get underway Thursday at 3 p.m.
