High school, college students compete in annual SkillsUSA conference
A total of 379 students from 30 Montana high schools - including several on the Hi-Line - took part in the SkillsUSA competition at Montana State University-Northern this week.
Thousands of dollars in prizes were given out to students who took part in 36 competitions;
Sgt. Cody Saranto, a U.S. Marine Corps Infantryman who graduated from Plains High School in 2006, was the keynote speaker for the event.
He gave an inspiring talk. He has been deployed in Bahrain and Kuwait, and is now the Marine Corps recruiter in Bozeman.
"Northern has been part of SkillsUSA since 1972, and has hosted 44 of the 45 state conferences," said Greg Kegel, MSU-Northern Chancellor. "MSU-Northern strives every year to provide a host of practical team and individual competitions. In the last five years we have really expanded the number of competitions that promote leadership as opposed to just technical skills. We present the winners with scholarships to Northern, and they are often among the best students on our campus."
Since its beginning, SkillsUSA, has been a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure that America continues to have skilled workers joining the workforce. The national organization has served more than 11.2 million members since its founding in 1965.
