Windy day doesn't stop girls at Cal Wearley

Some things change, some things always stay the same. And in Montana, when it comes to track weather, especially along the Hi-Line, things seems to always stay the same and that means the wind blows and that the conditions are less than ideal.

That’s exactly what the weather was like Wednesday at the Havre Middle School track, where 34 different teams met up to compete at the Cal Wearley Invitational. Yet, when it was all over, there was one team that stood out above all the rest and that was the Malta M-Ettes, who cruised to the girls team title with a total of 97 points, which put them well ahead of Fort Benton, which finished with 66 points and third-place Glasgow, which totalled 61.

“The nice thing about having a meet this big,” North Star head coach Brian Campbell said, “is that you get to see a lot of kids compete and they all get a chance to go up against some really good athletes.”

One athlete at the meet, who proved to the best of them all Wednesday was Sophia Stiles of Malta, who scored a ton of points to help Malta knock off the competition. Stiles, who was named the Montana Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year recently, won the 100-meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles and the shot put for Malta, while also finishing second in the long jump.

Yet, even though Stiles stole the show, Kailey Kleinjan had a solid day for the Sugarbeeters, finishing third in the 100 and second in the 200. Abigail Ellison posted a third-place finish for Chinook and Kourtney Hanson was fifth in 1,600. The Beeters finished in eighth place with 28 points.

“We have a really young team right now,” Chinook head coach Paula Molyneaux said. “The girls are a good mix of young and old. Kailey ran really well for us today. We have some nice youth and some nice experience, so we feel really good.”

Chinook may have done the best of local Class C teams, but the Havre girls also put together a solid effort, finishing fifth with 37.5 points. The Ponies dominated the pole vault as Amelia Beard won the event with a vault of 6-0. Loni Waid finished fourth in the pole vault and HHS teammate Kaylee Nystrom finished sixth.

Other Havre girls who placed were Rachel David, who notched a third-place finish in the 800; Kristen Nash, who was sixth in the javelin and Jordan Keith, who was sixth in both the shot put and discus. Logan Huebsch also had a stellar showing for Havre with a fifth in the 300 hurdles and a sixth in the 100 hurdles.

Other local athletes who stood out at the meet were Sheridan Spicher of North Star, who was fifth in both the 200 and the discus, as well as Graysen Spicher, who was second in the javelin and Peytan King, who was fourth in the javelin.

Khloe Kammerzell of CJI had a good afternoon, finishing fourth in the 110 hurdles and tied for second in the 300 hurdles. Emma Humphreys of Harlem had an outstanding performance in the discus, placing second. Jessica Roth of Big Sandy placed fifth in the 3,200 and Katelin Harvey of North Star also came in sixth in 400 for the Knights.

“The wind made things a little bit difficult at times,” Molyneaux said. “But overall, it was a good day for us.”

Havre and many of the other teams will be in action Saturday, again in Havre at the Havre Invitational. The action will start at 9 a.m. at the Havre Middle School track.
