Cal Wearley showcases local track talent

As usual, the wind blustered hard throughout the Cal Wearley Invitational track meet at the Havre Middle School track Wednesday. But that didn't stop hundreds of athletes and a total of 34 teams from competing.

The boys meet featured a number of top athletes from around the area, but as far as the team competition went, it was dominated by Class B's Glasgow, which took home first-place honors by racking up 102 points. Havre finished second with 83 points and Fairfield was third with 49. Chester-Joplin-Inverness was fourth with 40 points and Box Elder was sixth with 33.

While neither CJI or Box Elder finished in top 3, both teams got incredible individual performances from Justin May and Shane Ketchum. May, of CJI won the triple jump, finished second in the long jump, third in the 300 hurdles and third in the javelin throw. Cameron Davis was also second in the shot put for the Hawks.

Ketchum, who placed in four different events for the Bears, just as May did, won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:00. He also finished second in the 3,200, fourth in the 400 and sixth in the 800. Tanner Parisian also contributed to the effort by finishing third in the 1,600 for the Bears, while teammate Elias Duran was fourth in the javelin.

Other local athletes that were able to win events at the Cal Wearley included Nate Rismon of Havre, who won the 400 with a time of 54.10. Eddie Harmon of Turner, who won the 800 with a time of 2:15 and Isaiah RunsAbove of Hays-Lodge Pole, who took home first in the 3,200 with a time of 10:53.

The Havre boys 1,600 relay team also took home first-place honors with a time of 46.30. The team consisted of Ivar Aageson, Ethan Roberts, Rismon and Michael Lofus. Aageson also won the pole vault with a vault of 12-06. Rismon was third in the pole vault, Jacob LaBrie was second in the 400 and Loftus also came in second in the 100 for HHS.

There was also a slew of other athletes that earned ribbons led by Damon Adams of Harlem, who notched an impressive second-place showing in the 200 with a time of 24.00 and was third in the 100. Kordell Small of Rocky Boy was also sixth in the 100 and the 200.

Others that performed well at the meet were Karnauskas of Havre who finished second in the 800 and sixth in the high jump; Kyler Johnson of Chinook, who finished third in the 800 and the 3,200; Thomas Keith and Nik Keller of Havre, who finished second and fifth in the shot put and triple jump respectively and Matthew Helmbrecht of North Star, who finished fourth in the discus and fifth in the javelin.

"It was a good day for us," North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. "It's hard to see how your team is doing when you are running a meet like this, but from what I saw we did well."

The Knights, who host the meet on a yearly basis, did not finish highly, but regardless of that, it was still a great experience for everyone involved.

"We had a lot of kids here and a lot of competition," Campbell said. "We also have it set up so the kids can use their times here to try and qualify for meets down the road, at the end of the season, so it's a pretty important meet for a lot of these kids."

Havre and many other teams from along the Hi-Line will be back at the Havre Middle School track Saturday for the Havre Invitational.
