Local students to help fight hunger

Havre High School student Emily Brurud is organizing Fight Childhood Hunger Week, with activities that will try to raise awareness of local hunger issues.

The weeklong efforts, starting Monday, will be aimed at educating people about hunger issues, raising money to help fight hunger and getting people involved in volunteering for anti-hunger efforts.

Brurud appeared before Havre City Council Monday seeking — and getting — their support for the effort.

The organizers will place bright orange boxes Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods and at Havre High School so people can contribute food for anti-hunger efforts, she said.

In special need, she said, are Ramen, noodles, canned fruit and canned vegetables.

There will be an activity each day during the week, she said. They include:

Monday — People are asked to tie a tree in orange ribbon or cover a fence in orange to support of Youth Hunger Awareness. People can also wear an orange ribbon for the week.

Tuesday — People are encouraged to sign up for service at the lobby of Havre High School. They can agree to do volunteer work for the Havre Food Bank, Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen or any other community group.

Wednesday — People are asked to wear orange throughout the day. People can take the pledge to fight hunger at NoKidHunger.org.

Thursday — At noon in the high school gymnasium during “HS Shoot Our Hunger,” students can take part in a basketball competition. Winners will receive gift certificates from local businesses.

Friday — A presentation will be made to young people at the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line. Kids will be told what they can do to help other children succeed.
