Every year, the Havre Daily News All Hi-Line Girls basketball team is flush with talent. It’s flush with outstanding players from every part of the Hi-Line.
And the 2016 version of the All Hi-Line Team is no exception. However, it’s also full of newcomers to the list. After an exceptional year of girls basketball on the Hi-Line, the squad has just three repeat performers, despite being composed of 11 upperclassmen. The team, which features at least one member from all three area classifications, is made up of five seniors, six juniors and just one sophomore.
And, yet, it’s still a list full of exciting and talented players who have spent the last three months dazzling on the hardwood.
Dani Wagner, Havre
Wagner, who committed to play for Carroll College earlier this season, is the first of three performers to repeat on the All Hi-Line Team. Averaging 18 points per game, which was second-best in Class A, Wagner was the catalyst for another stellar year at Havre High.
For her efforts, she earned Class A All-State honors for the second straight season, as well as Central A First-Team honors. After she finishes what should be an outstanding spring playing softball, Wagner will become an All-State performer in three sports for the second straight year — a feat that has rarely been accomplished in the storied history of Havre High sports.
Naomi Terry, Havre
Terry tops the list for the second straight season, and, with a year of high school remaining, she’ll more than likely be just the third player to ever make the All Hi-Line Team three straight years come this time next winter.
This past season, Terry averaged 13 points and four assists per game, and, as HHS’ point guard, she earned Class A All-State honors, while helping the Ponies reach the state tournament for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.
Brooke Nicholson, Chinook
Nicholson is the third repeat performer on this year’s All Hi-Line Team. The senior helped guide the Sugarbeeters to the 9C championship game, and once again, to the Northern C Divisional tourney. Nicholson, a three-time Class C All-State standout, and four-time 9C All-Conference performer, will also join the rarefied air of earning All-State honors in three different sports for a second straight time when she completes what should be a stellar tennis season for Chinook later this spring.
Tyrah Gopher, Box Elder
Gopher was one of the most dominant post players on the Hi-Line this season. And though she makes the list for the first time in her outstanding four-year career, she’s been an impact player for Box Elder and head coach Joel Rosette for some time now. In helping lead the Bears to the Class C state title game earlier this month, Gopher, who averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per night, earned Class C All-State honors for the second straight season.
Sheridan O’Neil, North Star
Another senior on the list, O’Neil had a tremendous final season, as she was named All-State in both volleyball and basketball. On the hardwood, O’Neil led the Knights in scoring, rebounds and blocked shots, and was one of the top rebounders in the 9C all season long.
Minnie The Boy, Box Elder
The Boy is the second of four Box Elder Bears to make the All Hi-Line Team. A junior, it was her first season at Box Elder, and she instantly helped the Bears complete one of their most thrilling seasons in school history. An All Northern C performer, the Boy averaged 11 points and six assists per game and was stellar in helping the Bears capture the 9C title back in February.
Jude The Boy, Box Elder
Jude The Boy, a senior was another of four Bears to make the All Hi-Line Team, and one of seven different Box Elder players to score in double figures at one point or another this season. Another exciting guard in Box Elder’s up-tempo lineup, The Boy was a tenacious defender, while also averaging nearly 11 ppg on her way to All 9C and Northern C honors this season.
Brooke Elliot, Chinook
Another exciting post player on the All Hi-Line Team, Elliot really broke out this season, averaging close to 12 points and nine rebounds per game. She was also a tough defender in the paint for the Sugarbeeters and head coach Mollie Rose, and, after earning 9C All-Conference honors this season, Elliot will certainly be looked at as one of the top players in the 9C next winter.
Ella Billmayer, Turner
Billmayer has been turning heads in the 9C for seemingly ever now. But, because she was able to play for the Tornadoes as an eighth-grader, she just completed her junior season. And an outstanding season it was, as she averaged 15 points per game, while also helping Turner to its most total wins and best 9C finish in more than a decade.
Korrin Harmon, CJI
The lone underclassman on the list, Harmon joins her brother Troy as an All Hi-Line performer in 2016. Harmon was a top scorer for the Hawks all season long, but she really bustled loose in the 9C tournament back in February, where she averaged 20 points and shot better than 50 percent from the 3-point-line in helping CJI to a third-place finish, and a trip to the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls.
Tia Russell, Box Elder
Russell is the fourth Box Elder player to make the All Hi-Line Team. The junior guard is perhaps one of the most versatile players on the list as well, as she can score in a variety of ways, while also being another tenacious Box Elder defender. On her way to All Northern C honors this season, and, in helping the Bears to a spectacular season, which ended with just two losses to Belt, and a Class C runner-up finish, Russell averaged 10 points and six rebounds per game.
Rosie Parker, Rocky Boy
Parker was a consistent scorer, and a steady leader for a young Rocky Boy squad. But, she really blossomed in the postseason, where she averaged more than 17 points per game in helping the Morning Stars advance to the Northern B Divisional Tournament for the second straight year.
