Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

Dart — The National Association for Gun Rights is back in court trying to strike down provisions of Montana’s strict campaign finance laws, They tried the same tactic four years ago, when the group wanted to send out leaflets attacking Gov. Steve Bullock’s position on guns. They’re gearing up to do the same this year. Montana’s laws are clear. If you spend money trying to influence the outcome of an election, the public is entitled to know where you got your money, There are many examples of rich people seeking special legislation donating to candidates seeking to cash in later by winning votes on favorable legislation. People in this situation, obviously, hope that their names will never be released. That is a bad way to run a state. We hope the gun rights group will drop the suit. Failing that we hope judges uphold their earlier decisions.

Laurel — Cadence Kallenberger, a student at Lincoln-McKinley Primary School, will be traveling around Montana educating people about muscular dystrophy, a disease that she has. She is the ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Havre should be proud of this young lady and appreciate the important work she will be doing.

Laurel — Live Real Media is beginning to livestream Havre City Council meetings. We doubt that council meetings will top the ratings anytime soon, but there are people out there who want to see their government in action, and this offers people an excellent opportunity to do so. Someday we’d like to see council meetings and other governmental agencies on YouTube and Charter cable access channels and any other way we can get news out to the public.

Dart — Vandals, perhaps burglars is a better name for them, are breaking into 5th Avenue restaurants, making a mess of things and taking money and other items. The most recent victim was Spud’s Grub Hut. Police are going all out to find out who the perpetrators are. We bet somebody out there knows who is responsible. We hope they do the right thing and report what they know to Havre police.

Laurel — Easter egg hunts are part of community life in Havre. This year families have three options. People can attend any or all. The Havre High School Key Club will have a hunt at the school, at 11 a.m. Saturday. At 1 p.m,, the Eagles Club and Jaycees will hold a hunt at Eagles Park followed by a celebration at the Eagles Club. The Optimists will have their turn at 1 p.m. Sunday with a hunt at Optimist Park. Take the kids out to one or all of these events and have a good time. And while you are there, thank the members of these organizations for donating their time for these great community events on a holiday weekend.

Laurel — CASA — the Court Appointed Special Prosecutors — has helped numerous children in troubled situations. It’s hard to think of a group that does more good for so little money. These volunteers meet with families in trouble and advise judges what action they should take to help these families. Today and next Friday, CASA will hold a session at Holiday Village Mall to educate people on what CASA does and how it operates. A similar session will be held at HRDC on Thursday, also 4-6 p.m. This is tough volunteer work, but it has got to be rewarding.. Maybe it’s the kind of work for you.
