Sunday marked the first official day of spring. But, spring began last week for plenty of high school athletes across the Hi-Line.
In Havre, the Havre High tennis, track and field, and softball teams already have a full week under their belts, while track and field has begun across the area, in places like North Star, Chinook, Chester-Joplin-Inverness, Box Elder, Hays-Lodge Pole, Rocky Boy, Harlem, Turner, Big Sandy and Fort Benton among others.
And with one week of practice already in the books, official competition for high school spring sports is close at hand.
The Blue Pony tennis teams will be the first to compete, as they head to the annual Cut Bank Invitational Saturday. The HHS tennis teams have a couple of home dates scheduled, with the Havre girls taking on Class B-C champion Chinook April 5, while the Havre Invite will be held April 9.
The Chinook girls have also started their tennis season. The Sugarbeeters are the two-time defending Class B-C state champions and will certainly be favored to win a third straight title in May. The Beeters open their season against the Blue Ponies, and also play at home against Fort Benton and CJI in April, as well as Harlem and Big Sandy in May. Chinook also hosts the Northern B-C Divisional tournament May 13-14 in Havre, while the B-C state tournament is set for May 19-21 in Missoula.
The Havre High track teams start competing April 2 at the Lewistown Invitational, but the Blue Ponies have plenty of home dates on the schedule. Havre will take part in the Cal Wearley Invite, hosted by North Star April 6, while the Ponies host the Havre Lions Invite April 9, triangular meets April 14 and May 7. The Ponies’ postseason begins with the Eastern A Divisional May 20-21 in Laurel and the Class A state meet the following weekend in Bozeman.
Hi-Line track and field will be big this spring, too. In addition to North Star’s Cal Wearley Invite, the Knights also host the Groseclose Memorial May 2 in Rudyard, while the District 9C track meet will also take place at the Havre Middle School Track May 11.
The Blue Pony softball team has an exciting season ahead of it as well. The Ponies open their season April 2 at the Great Falls Jamboree, then play their first home games April 5 against Browning. In all, Havre has four home dates this season, including games against Glasgow April 21, Livingston April 30, and the Havre Invitational May 7. All of Havre’s home games will be played at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, while the postseason will begin with the Central A Divisional May 20-21 in Belgrade, and conclude with the Class A state tournament the following weekend, also in Belgrade.
Spring in Havre also means the start of Hi-Line United club soccer and the start of Havre Youth Baseball, so while basketball may be over now, there’s still plenty of exciting high school athletics to go around.
