Tips offered on mosquito prevention
Press release
The warm temperatures in north-central Montana the last few weeks has local officials warning that the mosquito season could start earlier than usual in the region.
Over the last few years, the U.S. has had increased cases of mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile Virus and other exotic diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya and Zika virus, which threaten people and their families. It is extremely important people make sure they are taking proper steps: first, reducing mosquito breeding through water management and source reduction, and second, reducing adult mosquito populations, officials say.
One of the easiest and most crucial thing to do is remove any stagnant water people have around their property. People should empty pots, tarps, tools and trash cans of any water that has collected because they are all breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
If mosquitoes already exist, removal of old tires and vegetation management are critical areas to address. Mosquitoes can also be kept out of the home by keeping windows, doors and porches tightly screened. People should especially repair holes in and damage to screens.
People should remember to practice the three D’s of mosquito prevention:
• Drain: Empty containers at least once per week.
• Dress: Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light colored, loose fitting clothing.
• Defend: Properly apply an approved repellant such as DEET, picaridin IR3535, or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. Re-apply as necessary.
