Havre students compete in Science Bowl

Twelve Havre High School students are going to the Big Sky Regional Science Bowl in Billings March 12, where they will contend for the chance to compete at the National Science Bowl, held at the 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The 24th annual 2016 Big Sky Regional Science Bowl challenges students' knowledge of math and science in a fast-paced quiz competition. The tournament is structured in round-robin style in the morning, with the high scoring teams advancing to a double-elimination game in the afternoon. Teams, made up of no less than four people, must work together to quickly and accurately answer toss-up and bonus questions.

Havre High biology and anatomy teacher Corey Gunderson, who is the coach, was prepping his students Thursday afternoon during lunch break in room 220, where Gunderson teaches. Since Havre High will have 12 students competing, Gunderson will have two teams competing at the Science Bowl.

One of the practice questions the students had to answer was: "There are 10 people on a bus who, when ranked from youngest to oldest, all differ from those on the bus closest in age to them by the same number of years. If the youngest is 6 and the oldest is 51, what is the common difference in their age."

The 12 students who will be going to Billings are Vander Swensen, 10th grade, Keefer Sands, 12th grade, Brandon Williams, 12th grade, Dustin Haas, 11th grade, Jillian Reighard, 10th grade, Clayton, Twombly, 11th grade, Shandon Oberquell, 11th grade, Logan Gardner, 11th grade, Trenton Smith, 11th grade, Trenton Parrotte, 12th grade, Randi Ruhkamp, 11th grade, Patrick Leeds, 12th grade.

The answer to the question is 5.
