Talk planned on abuse against Native women

The crisis of sexual and domestic violence against women in Indian Country will be the subject of a presentation Tuesday at Montana State University-Northern.

“Sovereignty, Justice and Truth, The Journey of Native Women in 2016: Ending Female Domestic and Sexual Violence in Indian Country,” is being sponsored by the office of Diversity Awareness and Multicultural Programs and the Montana Native Women’s Coalition.

The discussion will be hosted by Toni Plummer-Alvernaz, executive director of the Montana Native Women’s Coalition.

Cristina Estrada-Underwood, director of multicultural programs, said the problem of domestic and sexual abuse on Indian reservations, along with traditional healing practices to mitigate emotional pain, will be at the heart of the presentation.

Staff members of HRDC’s Domestic Violence Program will also be present.

The event will take place at 10 a.m. in “The Pit,” the lecture hall in Room 101 of the Hagener Science Center.
