Lights roll, Tech stuns Skylights

Frontier Playoffs set

For one Montana State University-Northern basketball team, senior night in the Armory Gymnasium was a dream. For the other, it was a nightmare.

On Saturday night, the Lights and Skylights closed out the regular season against Montana Tech, with the Northern men cruising to a 78-64 win, while the No. 16 Skylights were upset by the Orediggers, 80-67.

The loss to Tech was devestating for MSU-N (11-7, 22-7), because the Skylights fell from second alone, to a tie for third in the Frontier standings at 11-7. Northern tied Carroll College, which beat MSU-N twice this season, and as a result, the Skylights dropped all the way to the No. 4 seed and will have to play a first-round game against Rocky Mountain College Wednesday night in Havre. Had MSU-N beaten the Diggers, it would have had a bye and hosted the semifinals next Saturday. In the loss, the Skylights got 17 points from Sierra Richards and 14 each by Natalee Faupel. Tech guards Martha Dembek and Hattie Thatcher combined for 58.

Things went the opposite way for the Northern men. The Lights made 13-of-27 3-pointers, and got 29 points from senior Warren Edmondson as Northern won its fourth straight game, and its third this season over Tech. Another senior Trevail Lee added 18 points in his last home game, while KJ Rech had five boards and a big defensive game.

The win pushed the Lights (8-10, 19-11) into a fourth-place finish, tied with Rocky in the Frontier standings, and they will travel to Rocky Tuesday night for a first-round playoff game, because the Bears held a 2-1 advantage over Northern in the regular season.
