District tournaments weren’t just confined to Havre this past weekend. The Hi-Line’s two Class B schools were also getting their postseason underway in Shelby and Glasgow.
At the District 1B tournament in Shelby, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars had a great weekend, finishing third, and advancing to the Northern B divisional in two weeks.
Rocky Boy beat Shelby 47-31 in the third-place game Saturday afternoon, as the Morning Stars used a 15-5 run in the second quarter to pull away from the Coyotes. Rosie Parker scored 16 points and Maya Reed added 13 for Rocky Boy, which reached the Northern B for the third straight year.
The Morning Stars got to the consolation game with a 61-50 win over Conrad Saturday morning. Rosie Parker scored 15 points and Jaylynn Mitchell added 11 for Rocky Boy, which lost to eventual champion Fairfield, 50-32 in Friday’s semifinal. In that game, the Morning Stars got 10 points from Parker.
Rocky Boy got the tournament started off on a high note, opening with a 45-42 victory over Shelby Thursday. The Morning Stars trailed 10-2 after the first quarter, but they outscored the Coyotes 29-21 in the second half. Sean Henry led the way for the Morning Stars, who will play at the Northern B in Choteau March 3-5, with 15 points.
The tournament didn’t go as well for the Rocky Boy boys. The young Stars were eliminated in two games. On Thursday, Fairfield beat Rocky Boy 72-43, with the Stars getting 16 points from Jarrell Gopher and 15 from Kendall Windy Boy in the loss.
On Saturday, Rocky Boy was eliminated with a 63-58 loss to Conrad. In that game, Windy Boy scored a team-high 17 points as Rocky Boy’s season came to an end.
At the District 2B tournament in Glasgow over the weekend, both Harlem teams made their way into the Northern B.
The Harlem girls earned a first-round win over Poplar on Thursday, which punched their ticket to divisionals. The Wildcats edged the Indians 42-40, as they came from six points down in the fourth quarter to win. Skylee Dirden poured in 16 points for Harlem, which lost to Malta 77-25 in the semifinals Friday night.
After the loss to the M-Ettes, Harlem bounced back, though. The Wildcats earned a thrilling 48-46 win over Wolf Point in the consolation game, giving them a third-place finish. Against the Wolves, Harlem led by two points going into the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats did just enough to keep it that way by game’s end. Brooke LeValdo scored a game-high 20 points for Harlem, while Mari Ereaux added 12. The Wildcats will play at the Northern B in Choteau in two weeks.
The Harlem boys took almost the same path to divisionals over the weekend.
In the opening game Thursday, Harlem blew out Wolf Point 73-54, behind 21 points from Marcus Henry and 13 from Mike Butterfly. That put the Wildcats into the semifinals, where they fell to Malta 85-46 Friday night.
But, Harlem came right back and upset host Glasgow 56-50 in the consolation game Saturday. The Wildcats led 27-21 at halftime, and held off a late Glasgow charge to earn the third-place trophy. Marcus Henry had a huge night for Harlem, scoring 35 points in the win.
The Wildcats will now join the rest of the field at this weekend’s Northern B tournament in Malta.
