Rocky Boy, Harlem head to districts

The postseason in high school basketball, and for Class B boys and girls teams from Rocky Boy and Harlem, it’s win or go home.

Both the District 1B and 2B tournaments will start Thursday, and the top four teams from each advance on to the Northern B Divisional tournament. And both Rocky Boy and Harlem hope to be a part of that.

The 1B tourney in Shelby begins with boys action on Thursday. The Rocky Boy stars, who took third at the Class B state tournament a year ago, are a young squad this season, and they enter Thursday’s tourney as the sixth seed, and with the challenge of playing the Fairfield Eagles in the first round. The other first-round game pits Shelby, coached by former Havre High great Tom Reynolds, against Conrad, while top-seeded and defending state champion Choteau, as well as second-seeded Cut Bank have byes. The Stars, led by sensation 6-6 freshman Kyle Windy Boy, will have to pull of a couple of upsets to move on to the Northern B.

On the girls side, Rocky Boy has been playing well as of late and the Morning Stars enter tournament as the No. 4 seed. Led by the likes of Rosie Parker, Adrienne Gopher and Jurnee LaForge, Rocky Boy will battle Shelby in the first round Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Third-seeded Cut Bank also plays Conrad, while Fairfield and Choteau have byes.

Meanwhile, down Highway 2 in Glasgow, Thursday marks the start of the District 2B tournament, and both Harlem teams are decided underdogs. Also, because of Plentywood’s move to Class C, the loser of Thursday night’s play-in games will see their season come to an end.

And both Harlem squads are in those games. On the boys side, Harlem faces Wolf Point in a win-or-go-home game Thursday at 8 p.m. with the winner advancing to play top-seeded Malta. Glasgow plays Poplar on the other side of the bracket.

The Harlem girls play Poplar at 6:30 p.m. Thursday with the winner moving on to play to-seeded Malta, while Glasgow plays Wolf Point.

The top four teams from the 1B and 2B girls tournaments will move on to play in the Northern B March 3-5 in Choteau. The Northern B boys tournament is scheduled for next week in Malta.
