All in the family for HHS's Schaub
It’s no secret that wrestling is a tradition in Havre. There is a long history of great individual wrestlers and great wrestling families and one person that has a chance to fit into both categories is Tyler Schaub.
Schaub, who is currently a sophomore at Havre High, has already proven to be a standout on the mat for the Blue Ponies. Last year, as a freshman, Schaub won an individual title at the Central A Divisional and finished fourth in the Class A state tournament.
So in terms of being a great wrestler and being part of a great wrestling family, Schaub is well on his way and one reason for that is his older brother Casey Schaub, who starred in football and wrestling for HHS.
The older Schaub was a four-time medalist at state for the Ponies back in his day and in 2012, he captured an individual state title in the old 189-pound weight class. Tyler also looks to become a four-time medalist just like his older brother, but if he has it his way, he will get his individual title much sooner, as in this weekend at the All-Class State wrestling meet in Billings.
“I want to get at least two state titles,” the younger Schaub said. “That way I can show him up.”
And with the way that he has wrestled so far this season, posting a record of 39-8 and finishing second in the Eastern A Divisional, it wouldn’t be shocking if he did bring home an individual title this season or multiple titles down the road.
Yet, even if Schaub did that, the two-sport standout, who also excels at defensive end for the football team, still might not have the best wrestling resume in his own home.
That’s because in addition to having Casey Schaub, a former state champion as a brother, Tyler Schaub is also a step-brother to Jase Stokes, a junior on the Havre wrestling team and a two-time state champ in his own right.
While it may be difficult for Schaub to supercede Stokes’ achievements on the mat, like he is hoping to do with Casey’s, one area where he may give Stokes a run for his money is as a prankster.
“Yeah, we play pranks on each other all the time at home,” Schaub said. “But he’s helped me get better. He used to be way better (at wrestling) than me, but now we are pretty much equal. He has taught me a lot.”
Stokes also weighed in on the home life of his and Schaub’s and when asked if the two at all resembled Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in the movie “Step Brothers,” Stokes responded: “Oh yeah. We have bunk beds and stuff, and we wrestle around the house all the time.”
One thing that Stokes and Schaub have in common is that both have a chance to win an individual state title, while at the same time helping the Ponies capture their fourth consecutive team championship this weekend in Billings.
That quest begins Friday at the Rimrock Auto Arena at the Metra in Billings, but, before the Ponies hit the road to defend their title, the Havre Daily News caught up with Schaub for five questions.
HDN: What is your mindset going to state this year?
Schaub: "I am going there to win it."
HDN: What do you think will the biggest key for you to do that?
Schaub: "I just have to keep working the whole match at a high pace."
HDN: Which sport is your favorite, football or wrestling and why?
Schaub: "Wrestling. I like that you can't blame anyone else but yourself when you lose and when you win, you know you are better than the other guy."
HDN: So how does it feel to get a pin?
Schaub: "It lets you know that you are way better than that guy."
HDN: What do you think is the most exciting thing about state wrestling?
Schaub: "Just all of the people. It's great how everyone comes down to support us and cheer us on."
