Bears, Beeters, Longhorns rolling along
The stretch run of the 2015-16 high school basketball season is getting closer and closer. And with each passing weekend, every game takes on a postseason feel. And there were plenty of games this weekend in girls high school basketball on the Hi-Line that felt just like that.
The action started Thursday night when the Chinook Sugarbeeters blew out the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds, 72-37 in a District 9C game in Chinook. The T-Birds hung around for a half, but Chinook scored 42 points in the final 16 minutes.
Brooke Nicholson poured in a game-high 25 points for the Beeters, while Sierra Swank added 17. Jamie Parker scored 18 for HLP and Raleigh Kirkaldie added 12.
The 9C action continued on Friday night when the Turner Tornadoes and North Star Knights played a thriller in Turner. Trailing 37-26 entering the fourth quarter, the Tornadoes made a furious rally, but in the end, the Knights prevailed 45-43.
Sheridan O’Neil scored 25 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Knights, while Ella Billmayer scored 14 points for Turner.
In Box Elder, the host Bears looked to stay perfect on the season, and that’s exactly what they did when the blasted visiting Chester/J-I, 81-38. Box Elder scored 46 points in the first half, and then clamped down on defense, allowing the Hawks to score just 13 points in the final two quarters.
Lillian Gopher led five Bears in double figures with 16 points, Tyrah Gopher added 14, while Jaynee Parisian scored 11, and Jude The Boy and Alyssa LaMere each scored 10. Korrine Harmon paced C/J-I with 13 points.
Also in the 9C Friday night, the Fort Benton Longhorns had little trouble with the visiting Big Sandy Pioneers, as the Longhorns won 52-17. Kaitlyn Bird and Leah Gannon combined for 29 points for the Longhorns, while Jaelynn Cline scored five for struggling Big Sandy.
After the tough loss, the Pioneers had to turn right around and play Chinook Saturday night, and things didn’t go any better as the Beeters won 50-18. C/J-I also rebounded Saturday night, beating Hays-Lodge Pole 61-42.
Fort Benton on the other hand, got another 9C win Saturday night when the Longhorns bounced Turner 52-40 in Turner. The Tornadoes stayed within striking distance through three quarters, but an 11-2 run in the fourth propelled Fort Benton to the win.
Bailey Willson scored a game-high 18 points for Fort Benton, while Leah Gannon added 14. Turner got 11 points from Rylee Conlan and 10 from Rennay Watkins in the loss.
Saturday night was also business as usual for Box Elder. The Bears kept their perfect season going when they dropped North Star 62-48 in Rudyard. The Knights led 16-15 after one, but the Bears went on a 20-3 in the second period, and eventually turned the game into a blowout.
Tyrah Gopher grabbed 20 points and Jude The Boy scored 19 for Box Elder in the win. Sheridan O’Neil scored 11 and Paij Peterson added 10 for the Knights.
Saturday night was a rough night for the Hi-Line’s Class B squads.
In Rocky Boy, Cut Bank edged the host Morning Stars 56-52. The Morning Stars made a great fourth-quarter comeback, but couldn’t finish it off. Rosie Parker scored 21 points for Rocky Boy, and Jaylynn Mitchell added 16.
In District 2B action, Harlem was on the road to battle rival Wolf Point, but the Wolves were too strong at home, as they knocked off the Wildcats, 47-29. In the loss, Brooke LeValdo scored nine points and Skylee Dirden added eight.
