Havre swimmers tested with tough meets

It was a busy and exciting weekend in the pool for the Havre High boys and girls swim teams, as the Blue Ponies traveled to both Great Falls and Missoula for big races.

Friday, the Ponies were in Great Falls for a double-dual where the Havre girls defeated Great Falls High 146-96, but fell to CMR, 170-104. The HHS boys lost to the Bison 162-78 and the Rustlers, 128-94.

But on both sides, HHS swimmers turned in some great performances in the Swarthout Pool.

The Pony girls got a stellar day from senior Lita Cammon, who won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.48 and the 100 free in 58.97. Havre swimmers swept the freestyle races, as Amelia Miller took gold in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.5. Hannah Lunak also finished fourth in the 50 free, while Alara Vogel placed sixth in the 100 free.

The Ponies were fast in other swims as well. Miller finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:13.73, while Jackie Martin was third at 1:18.62 and Jessica Otto was sixth. Vogel took second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:26.63, and Laura Vance was sixth. Lunak placed second in the 100 backstroke at 1:08.74 and Jillian Reighard was sixth, while Ally Padgett placed fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:44.50.

As always, the Pony girls scored big points in the relays too. In the 200 medley, they were second at 2:08.93, while the Havre A squad took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.51 and the B team was fifth. The Havre A's also placed third in the 400 free with a time of 4:35.76, while the B team was fourth.

The Havre boys also scored well in the relays in Great Falls. The Havre A team finished third with a time of 2:08.26 in the 200 medley, while the B's were fifth, and the A team also finished third in the 200 free at 1:53.28, while the B's were again fifth.

Individually, Ethan Lines finished an outstanding second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:11.96, while Clayton Twombly was fourth. Havre also did very well in the 100 breaststroke where Aylan Pratt was second at 1:17.30 and Shandon Oberquell was third at 1:19.24. Mason Sandstrom added a fifth-place finish in the 100 free with a stellar time of 59.34.

After the double-dual in Great Falls was in the books, the Ponies turned their attention to the Missoula Invitational, which was held at the University of Montana Grizzly Pool Saturday, and was a meet that had a state meet type feel to it.

With some very good teams in attendance, the Havre girls wound up seventh out of 12 teams with 119 points, while the HHS boys finished 12th with 45.5 points. Missoula Hellgate dominated both the boys and girls competitions, scoring over 400 points in each.

The relays were again the Pony girls majority of points, as Havre finished sixth in both the 200 medley and the 200 free. But, HHS also got two outstanding individual performances as Miller finished second in the 500 free with a time of 5:35.90 and Aubri McCann placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:15.97.

Havre has one meet left, an event this Saturday in Great Falls, before the Ponies head to the Montana State Swimming Championships, which are also in Great Falls Feb. 12-13.
