The Havre Community Education program will offer adult winter classes that range from snowshoeing the Bear Paw Mountains to cooking chimichangas and sweating to the dance workout Oula.
Robyn Lewis has been the Community Education coordinator for three years and said the reasons five of the 26 classes center around learning how to cook Mexican dishes are because people have enjoyed learning how to make Mexican dishes in the past, and because instructor Karina Wheeler is really good at what she does. In fact, the availability of willing, talented instructors is largely how Lewis determines what classes Community Education offers.
Sylvia Murray is a genealogy expert who will be teaching two different classes that are meant to empower people with the skills to find their family history. Kirt Miller is local musician who will be teaching two classes of guitar instruction. Crafter Gerda Mullner will be teaching three crochet classes.
Not that learning to play pinochle or canasta isn’t a valuable skill — yes, those classes are options too — but other available classes may impart invaluable knowledge and skills onto participants.
Herman Handstede will be teaching CPR; a lecture on what to do when a child gets sick will be given by Marit Ita; and Montana State University-Northern professor Chad Spangler will be discussing personal health and wellness for six sessions.
Residents who are 62 or older can get a discount on many of the classes by registering for a 62-plus card. The card also entitles holders to admission to athletic events (tournaments excluded) and admission to fine arts activities.
The classes, depending on what they are, will be held at Havre High School, Havre Middle School, Havre City Pool — there are three aqua aerobic classes — North Central Senior Center and the Atrium Mall.
Registration for classes is Jan. 25-29. For questions on classes or enrollment, email [email protected], call 265-4356, ext. 6716, or go online at http://www.havre.k12.mt.us.
