Harlem wins twice; Box Elder still perfect
It may be cold outside, but the girls basketball season is just starting to cook along the Hi-Line. And this past week saw more big games in our area.
The action started Thursday night when Box Elder kept its undefeated season going with a 58-31 in Turner. Turner battled early, but the explosive Bears used a 22-8 run in the second quarter to pull away.
Jude The Boy led all scorers with 21 points for the Bears, while Lillian Gopher added 11. Turner got a team-high 12 points from Ella Billmayer.
Thursday night also saw an important District 9C battle between Fort Benton and Chester/J-I in Chester. But in the end, the Longhorns proved too much for the host Hawks. The game was still narrow at halftime, but the Longhorns scored 37 points in the final 16 minutes to pull away.
Maddie Thompson scored 20 points for Fort Benton, while Bailey Willson added 13. The Hawks got 15 points and 12 rebounds from Madeline Woods, while Peyton Cole added 13.
The Hawks tried to bounce back Friday night, but moving up to play Class B Cut Bank, they fell short. C/J-I led at the half thanks to a 19-5 run in the second quarter, but Cut Bank exploded for 22 points in the final stanza to edge its Class C rival. Kristina Dahinden scored 19 points for C/J-I in the loss.
Back in the 9C Friday night, Chinook found itself in a battle with the North Star Knights in Chinook. The Sugarbeeters led 36-29 after three quarters, and while North Star battled hard, the Knights couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Brooke Nicholson and Sierra Swank combined for 21 points for Chinook, while Peyton King scored 15 for the Knights.
The winless Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds stepped out of 9C play Friday night, but they were no match for powerful Roy-Winifred, as the Outlaws won 69-38. Rayleigh Kirkaldie did pour in a game-high 26 points for the T-Birds in a losing effort.
Turner also beat Big Sandy 49-33 Friday night.
Friday night also saw some big Class B games on the Hi-Line, including Harlem taking down Shelby 40-37 in Harlem. The Wildcats came back from trailing in the fourth quarter and got a big 17 points from Brooke LeValdo.
The Rocky Boy Morning Stars weren’t as fortunate however. One night before taking on Class A Havre High, the Morning Stars were tasked with trying to stop 1B powerhouse Fairfield in Rocky Boy. But, in the end, the Eagles were too good as the turned away a valiant effort by the Morning Stars in a 49-33 win. Rosie Parker led Rocky Boy with 14 points.
While Friday night was a good night for Harlem so, too, was Saturday night. On the road, the Wildcats won their first 2B game of the season, as they beat Poplar 48-40. In the win, Brooke LeValdo scored 16 points, while Autumn Little Plume added 12.
Saturday night had a big 9C game on the docket as well, but, Chinook ended blasting Fort Benton, 50-22 in a battle for second place. The Chinook defense completely shut the normally high-scoring Longhorns down, allowing just five points in the second half.
Brooke Nicholson scored 19 points for Chinook, while Abby Ellison added 17. Alia Evans notched 11 in what was just Fort Benton’s second loss of the season.
Meanwhile, North Star picked up a rebound win in the 9C Saturday night, as the Knights crowned Big Sandy, 60-36. North Star led just 26-23 at halftime, but the Knights outscored the Pioneers 34-13 the rest of the way.
Sheridan O’Neil poured in a game-high 21 points for North Star, while Graysen Spicher added 10. Jaelyn Cline scored 15 and Maddie Reichelt added 10 in the loss for Big Sandy.
Saturday night also saw the Box Elder Bears stay perfect with an easy win in Hays-Lodge Pole. The Bears won 66-12.
