Blue Ponies swim great in Great Falls

The Havre High girls swim team proved a lot to themselves at last weekend’s Class A Invite in Havre. But, the Blue Ponies proved even more this past Saturday in Great Falls.

Competing in the Stacey Frey Memorial at the Swarthout Pool Saturday, a meet composed of the best of the best in Montana, including Bozeman High, CMR and Billings Central, the Ponies swam to an outstanding third-place finish.

Havre scored 182 points, and for the second straight meet, topped arch rival Billings Central, which finished fifth. Class AA powers Bozeman and CMR finished first and second, respectively.

Once again, the Ponies were stout in the relays. Havre finished third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:52.60, fourth in the 200 medley relay at 2:08.02 and fifth in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:20.25.

But, Havre is also proving that it has some of the best individual swimmers in the state, and that was on display again Saturday, led by Amelia Miller who won the 200 free with a time of 2:06.53. She also finished second in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:36.48.

Aubri McCann and Lita Cammon also came up big for the Ponies. McCann placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.05, while Alara Vogel was seventh in the same race. McCann added a seventh-place finish in the 50 free, while Cammon was fourth with a time of 27.11. Hannah Lunak placed sixth in the same race. Cammon also swam a blazing 59.88 to place fifth in the 100 free, while Jackie Martin added a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly.

The Blue Pony boys also had their moments Saturday. Havre finished seventh overall with 59 points in a meet dominated by the Bozeman Hawks.

The Ponies’ best event was the 200 medley relay where they finished sixth with a time of 2:06.64, while individually, Mason Sandstrom was seventh in the 50 free and Shandon Oberquell was seventh in the 100 breaststroke.

The Ponies swim again this Friday in Great Falls before heading to the prestigious Missoula Invitational Saturday.
