St. Jude Thaddeus School geography bee yields light-hearted moment

The annual geography bee at St. Jude Thaddeus School was held Wednesday, and it ended with a light-hearted, Steve Harvey-like moment.

The questions for the bee came from a packet provided by National Geographic. They weren't all strictly academic and included: "In what city was the train station that Harry Potter waits to get to Hogwarts?"

The bee, which was held in the school gym, was moderated by Father Daniel Wathen. The contest began with 10 students from various grades: Jessica Majerus, Andrew Nelson, Trennis Riley, Talia Ralph, Nicholas Nelson, Kelly Shafer, Mackenzie Kuhn, Tyler Majerus, Cecilia Ymzon and Karina Rodrigues.

Then it dwindled down to three: Schafer, a sixth-grader; Ralph, in seventh grade; and Nelson, an eighth-grader. After Schafer dropped out, the bee turned into a duel between Ralph and Nelson.

The last question was answered. Czech Republic was the right answer, but one of the students had written Czechoslovakia on the answer pad.

Wathen paused, turned to his right and then walked over and checked with someone in the bleachers. He came back to the podium.

Czechoslovakia was acceptable. Andrew Nelson won the bee. Everyone in the bleachers clapped.

Wathen walked over and began to put a blue ribbon around Ralph's neck. Then he paused, pulled back, laughed along with everyone in the bleachers and walked over to crown Nelson.

The next bee is a spelling bee, which will take place Feb. 3.

The answer is London - Harry waited in London to take the train to Hogwarts.
