Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Three wins: Box Elder takes control of 9C

The holiday break is now long gone, and that means, it's time for the girls high school basketball season to hit the heart of the year. And, it started on the Hi-Line this past week with a lot of games and some good matchups.

Last Tuesday saw a big one in the District 9C as Chinook and Box Elder met in Chinook. The Bears and Sugarbeeters are two of the best in the 9C this year, but it was Box Elder which showed dominance on Tuesday night with a 60-40 win.

Box Elder may be known for scoring, but its defense was key against the Beeters. The Bears held Chinook to just two points in the first quarter, and led 32-10 at halftime in the blowout win. Jude The Boy scored 14 points for Box Elder, while Minnie The Boy added 10. Kelsey Mathon led all scorers with 16 for Chinook, while Brooke Nicholson added 14.

Tuesday night also saw the Turner girls earn their fourth win of the season, as the Tornadoes thumped Dodson, 50-36. Turner scored 21 points in the first stanza, and got 11 total from Ella Billmayer, while Rylee Conlan and Rennay Watkins each scored nine.

Turner was just as good on Friday as the Tornadoes got back into 9C play, and drubbed Hays-Lodge Pole 39-19. Turner led 26-7 at halftime and the T-Birds never got close. Ella Billmayer again scored 11 points to lead the Tornadoes, while Miqueca Perez scored eight for HLP.

Chinook managed to bounce back from its loss to Box Elder by beating Harlem on Friday night. The game was a renewal of an old District 2B rivalry, and the now Class C Sugarbeeters dominated the Wildcats, 55-27.

Meanwhile, Friday night was a big one as the last two unbeatens in the 9C clashed when Box Elder traveled to Fort Benton. But, like in Box Elder on Tuesday night, the Bears proved they are the team to beat this year, as they crushed the Longhorns 66-39. The Bears dominated early, winning the first quarter 21-13, and late, as they out-scored the Longhorns 26-11 in the final eight minutes.

Tyrah Gopher led the way for Box Elder with 15 points, while Lilly Gopher scored 14 and Alyssa LaMere added 10. Fort Benton got nine points from Alia Evans in its first conference loss.

The busy Friday in the 9C also saw the Chester/J-I Hawks blast Big Sandy 76-18. C/J-I scored 51 points in the first half and got 21 points by Korrin Harmon, as well as 12 from Peyton Cole and 10 from Kendahl Knapton. The Pioneers were led by five points each from Jenna Leader and Maddie Reichelt.

North Star stepped out of conference play Friday night, but it wasn't easy as the Knights fell to Geraldine-Highwood 32-24. The game was tight throughout, but the Knights couldn't find the buckets in the final eight minutes. Sheridan O'Neil led the way for the Knights with eight points.

In Class B action Friday night, things were brutally tough for the Rocky Boy Morning Stars, who were crushed by the Malta M-Ettes, 68-13. The Morning Stars trailed the defending Class B champs 41-7 at the half, and Rosie Parker led Rocky Boy in scoring with nine points.

Rocky Boy played much better on Saturday night, but, even with a late run, the Morning Stars still fell to District 1B rival Choteau, 46-32. The Morning Stars started strong and led 10-8 after one, but Choteau scored 21 points in the second quarter, and Rocky Boy, which got nine points from Jaylynn Mitchell, had to play from behind the rest of the way.

Back in the 9C Saturday night, Box Elder made it three wins in one week, as the Bears ran by Big Sandy 62-28. Tyrah Gopher scored 13 points for the undefeated Bears, while Jenna Leader led Big Sandy with 10.

Fort Benton, which now trails Box Elder in the 9C standings, rebounded from its loss to Box Elder with a 60-19 thrashing of HLP Saturday night. Leah Gannon scored a game-high 17 points for the Longhorns, while HLP got eight points from Rayleigh Kirkaldie in the loss.

In other 9C games Saturday night, Chinook took care of Turner 52-34, while C/J-I got a big win over rival North Star. The Hawks edged the Knights 40-36 in a big 9C showdown that was close throughout.

Also, in Class B action Saturday night, Harlem came up just short in a 57-49 loss at Glasgow. The Wildcats trailed by just two at the end of three, but the Scotties were able to hold on for the win. Mari Ereaux scored 16 points from Harlem, while Brooke LeValdo added 11.
