Hawks, Bears, Tornadoes win big games
It was a busy week for local Hi-Line basketball teams, as some schools played as many as three games in a five day span. And two of the teams opened the week against each other last Tuesday in Chinook.
The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Box Elder Bears, who each came into the game with just one loss overall and one loss in District 9C play, went head-to-head in an important matchup, but in the end, the Bears came out on top 69-40.
Jerrod Four Colors scored 22 points to lead the way for Box Elder, while Pernell Morsette and Jake Jones contributed with 13 points. Brandon The Boy finished with 11 as Box Elder scored 41 second-half points to run away from Chinook. Cord Schneider led the way for the Beeters with 10. Ian McIntosh pitched in with eight and Isaac Bell had seven.
Another 9C team, the Turner Tornadoes were also in action last Tuesday, as they paid a visit to Dodson in non-conference play. The Tornadoes came into the game winless, but thanks to a 38-point second half, they earned their first victory of the season with a 61-54 win.
Tracer Keiling led the way for Turner with 18 points in the win. Bret VanValkenburg also contributed with 15 points for the Tornadoes as did Eddie Harmon.
After taking down Chinook, Box Elder traveled to Fort Benton Friday and won their second district game in three days with a 61-21 win over the Longhorns. Morsette had another big game for the Bears as he led the all scorers with 13 points. Trey Henderson also had a solid outing with 11 and Bernard pitched in with eight. Taylor Argahnbright led the way for the Longhorns with nine points.
Unlike the Bears, Chinook took part in a non-district game on Friday, as the Beeters traveled to Harlem to take on their old Class B rivals. And in a game that came down to the final minutes, Chinook found a way to escape with a 47-45 victory.
McIntosh led the way for the Beeters with 15 points. Travis Hamilton also had 11. Marcus Henry did he best to give the Wildcats the win, after totaling 21 points in a losing effort. Michael Butterfly also added 11.
In other Class B action, the Rocky Boy Stars played host to Malta and despite hanging around early, the Stars would be beat handily by the Mustangs 65-45. Ben Iron Eyes was the leading scorer for Rocky Boy with 14 points, while Jerrell Gopher finished with 10.
One team that didn't see the floor until last Friday night was the Chester/J-I Hawks, who came into the week leading the 9C with a perfect 4-0 record. Friday, the Hawks were at home against Big Sandy in Chester and from the get-go, it was clear the Pioneers were no match for the Hawks, who knocked off Big Sandy 87-26.
Cory Richter had a huge night for C/J-I, finishing the game with 28 points. Justin May also had a solid night with 15 points for the Hawks, who also got nine points from Bruce Tempel. Laurence Alderdice led the way for the Pioneers with 10 points.
North Star also hit the floor on Friday and traveled to Geraldine to take on Geraldine/Highwood in a battle of Northern C clubs. And in am impressive showing, the Knights earned a 59-37 road win with 10 points from Keevan Borlaug and seven from Matthew Helmbrecht.
On Saturday, Box Elder looked to close out a 3-0 week in district play with a home win over Big Sandy and that's exactly what it got, as the Bears clobbered the Pioneers 89-29. Four Colors had 12 points in the win for Box Elder, while Shane Ketchum also had nine. Alderdice had 11 points to lead Big Sandy.
With the Bears winning, C/J-I needed to win again on Saturday to maintain their lead over the Bears and with the North Star Knights in Chester, the Hawks achieved their objective thanks to a 68-41 win over the Knights.
The Hawks shot the ball well throughout the game and scored at least 16 points in each quarter of the game. Troy Harmon led C/J-I with 18 points. Cory Richter added 15 points, while Justin May had 12 and Brandon Richter finished with 11. Payton Peterson poured in 24 points to lead the way for North Star.
Elsewhere in the 9C on Saturday, Chinook welcomed Turner into their gym and the Beeters got their second straight win with a 76-43 triumph over the Tornadoes. Bell poured in 29 points in the win for the Beeters, while Hamilton had 11 and McIntosh had eight. Harmon was the high scorer for Turner with 14 points.
The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds also got themselves in the win column on Saturday thanks to a 70-27 win over Fort Benton Saturday in Fort Benton.
After falling to Malta on Friday night, Rocky Boy hit the road to take on Choteau in hopes of getting a split for the weekend. Yet, the Bulldogs had other ideas and dominated the Stars in a 94-55 trouncing. Kendall Windy Boy was a strong point for the Stars with 17 points. Kordell Small also finished with 11.
In other Class B basketball Saturday, the Harlem Wildcats got an important win over the Glasgow Scotties, edging them out for the win with a 37-36 victory in Harlem.
