Great Falls woman displays multitude of Nativity scenes

Cathy Olthoff of Great Falls has been collecting Nativity scenes most of her life.

She has a special fascination with the depictions of the birth of Christ. She believes they mark the true meaning of Christmas.

She collected several hundred types of Nativity scenes of all shapes and sizes. They are made out of everything from wood to enamel. They come from all over the world - Japan, Thailand, Mexico, Peru and all over Europe.

She kept them in her home for many years, even holding special parties where people could come and enjoy them,

But then, she said, she decided that she had to share her gift with other people.

Three years ago, she decided she wanted to let the entire community in on the joy of seeing the scenes.

Starting that year she hasset up shop each Christmas season at the Columbus Center, 1601 2nd Ave. Suite 108, Great Falls.

The 700 Nativity scenes are set up in the building, and people have been coming in to see them. People are amazed, she said, at the number and variety of Nativity scenes.

Many Havre residents who come to Great Falls to shop are unaware of the treat that could be in store for them, she said.

She is sending a special invitation to Hi-Line residents, letting them know they are especially welcome to tour the exhibit Monday through Saturday during business hours at the center.

People with questions or who would like to arrange group tours can call Carol Olthoff at 406-799-8109.

And for people who can't make it this year, she will be back next year with an even bigger collection.

She adds an average of 40 Nativity scenes each year.
