It was another good week for the Montana State University-Northern wrestling. Following Thursday night’s win over Southern Oregon, the Lights went west, for the Cardinal Duals Saturday and the Spokane Open Sunday afternoon.
Northern swept its two duals Saturday at North Idaho College, beating Simon Fraser University 35-13 and Highline College 40-12. The Lights then moved on to Spokane for the Spokane Open, where they finished second in the team competition.
In the Simon Fraser dual, Mhar Caballa (125), Tommy Cooper (157), Willie Miller (174), Garrett DeMers (197) and Taylor Kornoely (HWT) were all victorious, with Miller and Kornoely earning pins. Matt Weber (141) and Drake Randall (149) also earned forfeits in the dominating performance.
Against Highline, all of MSU-N’s wins came by way of bonus points. Quintel Fuchs (125) won by pin, Blake Ivie (133) won by major decision, Matt Weber (141) won by pin, Brandon Weber (149) won by major decision, Austin Blaede (165) won by pin, Miller (174) won by technical fall, DeMers (197) won by major decision and Kornoely (HWT) won by technical fall.
On Sunday, at the Spokane Open, head coach Tyson Thivierge rested a few of his starters, but the Lights still scored 132 points to finish second behind UGF. Northern placed eight wrestlers and crowned three champions.
At 125 pounds, Fuchs bested Caballa in an all-Northern finale, while Miller rolled to the 174-pound title. He tech. falled Tyler Howe of Pacific in the final. MSU-N freshman Zach Haviland also finished an outstanding third at 174, with his only loss coming to Howe in the semifinals. Kornoely was also dominant at heavyweight. He pinned Nishawn Randhawa of Simon Fraser in the final. Miguel Morales also scored eight points for the Lights at heavyweight.
Randall and Cooper also reached the finals for the Lights. At 149, Randall lost to SOU’s Chandler Michael in the chipper, while Cooper was beaten by Boise State’s Demetrius Romero in the 157-pound championship. At 133 pounds, Ivie finished fourth, while Robert Pair (125), Logan Foster (165), Blaede (165), Jake French (184), Dace Fisher (184), Sam Lindsey (184), Stephen Hyatt (197) and Casey Schaub (197) were all also in action for the fifth-ranked Lights.
Northern will now have a much-deserved week off before the Lights return to action for the Battle of the Rockies Dec. 4-5 in Great Falls.
