The Havre Blue Ponies were excited for their long-awaited return to the Class A state tournament. Unfortunately, for HHS, things didn’t quite go as planned.
The Ponies opened their state volleuball tournament Thursday in Bozeman at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse against the favored Butte Central Maroons. And despite Havre’s designs of an upset, the Ponies fell short, getting swept by the Maroons by the scores of 29-27, 25-16 and 25-21.
Butte Central, the second-place team from the Western A, had to go to extra points to take out the Ponies in the first set between the two teams, but earned nine-point and four-point wins in the second and third sets to close out the match.
Havre was competitive throughout the match and was out hit by the Maroons just 35-31 in kills. Yet, Butte Central dominated the net, finishing with eight blocks compared to none for Havre.
Reggie Bernard led the way for HHS with 11 kills, while Dani Wagner also contributed with five kills and 14 assists. Jacey McDonald pitched in with seven kills, while Madison Huebsch and Kaitlin Nystrom each had 12 digs.
Teresa Piazzola led the way for the Maroons with 11 kills. Corbyn Holm pitched in with 10 and Lacey McGree had nine. Emily St. John added 30 assists and two blocks, while Mollie Peoples notched 18 digs.
The Ponies will look to stave off elimination in the double-elimination tournament this morning when they take on Whitefish in loser-out action.
Like Havre, the Chinook Sugarbeeters also made their way to the All-Class state tournament in Bozeman, competing in the Class C state tournament. But, like Havre, the Beeters didn’t find success on opening day, falling to Manhattan Christian in straight sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-19.
The Beeters were out hit by Manhattan Christian 33-21 and outperformed in assists by a margin of 32-19. Abby Ellison led the way for Chinook in the loss with 10 kills and two blocks. Sierra Swank had 11 assists, two aces and two blocks. Brooke Nicholson also pitched in with 23 assists. Megan Kamps paced Manhattan Christian with a match-high 16 kills. Gina Potts also had a solid outing with eight kills, 15 digs and six aces.
Chinook plays again this afternoon against Absarokee in loser-out action.
