Havre firefighters spent two hours Saturday morning fighting the fire in Smithville that is believed to have been caused by a faulty water heater.
Kaupang's children, ages 14, 10, 7, 6 and 3 months were not at home at the time.
Kaupang was with his girlfriend, who was making plans to move in with him.
Now he and the baby are living with her, and the older youngsters are living with their mother.
"It's a small apartment," he said, There isn't room for Kaupang and his family.
Friends are working to raise money and provide help for them.
Kaupang said people have been generous in donating clothes, and some people have promised furniture, but there is no place to put it yet, he said.
Kaupang owned the trailer, but neither the trailer nor its contents were insured.
He said he will literally be starting from scratch in putting his household back together.
A GoFundMe account has been set up for Kaupang and his family.
