The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team finished the 2015 season with a trip to the NAIA Elite 8, and a No. 8 national ranking in the last NAIA Women's Coaches Poll of the spring.
Now, the Skylights are in the midst of a brand new season, and they are ranked even higher. The 2015-16 NAIA Women's Preseason Coaches Poll was released Tuesday afternoon, and Northern is ranked No. 6 - the highest national ranking for an MSU-Northern team in any sport in the last decade.
The Skylights, who are off to a 4-0 start this season, were picked to win the Frontier Conference this year, and they received the highest amount of votes of any Frontier team in the poll. However, that poll is also loaded with Frontier squads, as it appears that the league will once again be very, very difficult.
UGF, which is picked to finish second in the Frontier, also achieved its highest ranking ever, as the Argos start the season ranked No. 11. UGF was No. 12 in the final poll last spring. Lewis-Clark State and Carroll College are also in the Top 25, with the Warriors coming in at No. 19 and the Fighting Saints at No. 24.
On the men's side, only two Frontier teams are ranked in the NAIA Preseason Coaches Poll. Defending Frontier champion LC State is ranked No. 13 after being picked to win the Frontier title again this season. The Warriors finished last year ranked No. 23. UM-Western is ranked No. 23 in the preseason poll, while Rocky Mountain College and Carroll College received votes.
