The Montana State University-Northern Lights had their best offensive day of the season Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium. But the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers were even better.
EOU racked up nearly 700 yards off offense and over 200 return yards in a 72-30 win over the Lights Saturday in Havre. On the flip side, Northern tallied nearly 500 yards of offense, and got four touchdown passes from Jess Krahn, including two to Jake Messerly, as well as 178 yards rushing and a 78-yard score from Zach McKinley.
After the game was tied at 0-0 at the end the of the first quarter, EOU took a 21-3 lead into halftime following three straight scores.
The two teams then combined for a whopping 48 points and eight touchdowns in the third period. That quarter produced MSU-N's best offensive output of the season to date.
Still, the loss dropped MSU-N to 0-7 in the Frontier Conference and 0-8 overall. Northern will look for its first win next Saturday at Carroll College.
EOU, which got 325 yards passing from quarterback Zach Bartlow, 135 yards rushing from Jace Billingsley, and a school record 379 all-purpose yards from wide receiver Calvin Connors, improved to 3-4 in the Frontier and 3-5 overall.
