DAVIS, CALIF., (AP) - The Montana Grizzlies didn't start off the right way again on the road. But, they found a way to win on the road nonetheless.
Chad Chalich overcame a slow start to pass for 265 yards and three touchdowns, leading No. 12 Montana to a 27-13 win over UC Davis on Saturday in Big Sky Conference action. It was UM's first road win under head coach Bob Stitt.
"We needed to be able to come here and play with some excitement and have some fun together on the road," said Stitt."It's awesome being home, but we need to enjoy these road trips also."
Chalich completed 29 of 49 passes with Chase Naccarato catching 13 for 84 yards, both career highs. Chalich started 4 of 10 for 14 yards before connecting on nine straight.
Chalich, who also led the team in rushing with 64 yards on 17 attempts, had touchdown passes of 20 yards to Ben Roberts and 42 yards to Jamaal Jones in the first half to give the Grizzlies (3-2, 2-0 Big Sky Conference) a 14-13 lead. He hit Ellis Henderson with a 4-yard TD in the third quarter.
Montana iced the game with a 16-play, 85-yard drive in the fourth quarter capped by Jeremy Calhoun's 5-yard run.
Montana racked up 449 yards of offense on 97 plays, and on special teams, the Griz got an 87-yard punt from Chris Lider which wound up resulting in a UC Davis fumble.
The Aggies (0-5, 0-2) had four turnovers with Caleb Kidder recovering a fumble and intercepting a pass for Montana.
The Grizzlies are back inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium to host Weber State in another Big Sky clash this Saturday. Going into the game, UM is tied with Southern Utah for first place in the Big Sky standings.
N. Arizona 49, Bobcats 41
FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ., (AP) - Case Cookus threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns and Northern Arizona withstood a late flurry to beat Montana State 49-41 Saturday.
The Lumberjacks (3-2, 1-1 Big Sky) traded touchdowns with the No. 11 Bobcats early. Cookus found Emmanuel Butler for a 2-yard score to give NAU a 21-14 lead. Casey Jahn carried the ball in from a yard out to make it 28-14 right before halftime.
Jahn scored again from 6 yards out, then wideout Alex Holmes threw 10 yards to R.J. Rickert to extend the lead to 42-14. Holmes had 72 yards receiving and scored twice. Cookus threw his fourth touchdown pass to Holmes from 13 yards out.
Dakota Prukop threw for 399 yards and four touchdowns for the Bobcats (2-2, 1-1). He threw for scores of 13, 85 and 40 yards in about a four-minute span in the fourth. NAU recovered the onside kick with 1:48 left to seal it.
In the Bobcats' furious rally, Prukop threw TDs to Justin Paige, Mitch Greibel and Gunnar Brekke, while the Cats rolled up nearly 600 yards of total offense, with Chad Newell running for 84 on the ground.
But it wasn't enough to hold off the Lumberjacks, who had 506 yards of offense, including 250 on the ground.
"I guess 49 points is a lot of points, and we've got to get some questions answered," said MSU head coach Rob Ash. "We've still got the capacity to score a lot of points, so I don't think it's a huge change that has to be made. We've just got to make a couple more stops."
The Bobcats are back home to host Sacramento State this Saturday night at Bobcat Stadium.
