The Montana State University- Northern Alumni Association raised a record amount of money during its Northern Alumni Scholarship Auction and Social, held each year to raise money for scholarships given to Northern students.
As of 9 a.m. Monday, Foundation Executive Director Jim Bennett and other event organizers were still counting the funds, but Bennett said more than $23,000 had been donated. In 2014, more than $17,000 had been raised.
Bennett said about 200 people bought tickets. Some 50 student athletes and another 50 alumni volunteers helped with the activities.
The event consisted of a Chinese auction, a dinner, a live auction and a silent auction.
A Chinese auction is a cross between a raffle and a conventional auction. In a Chinese auction, instead of putting down large sums of money for an item, those interested give a dollar to a volunteer who holds up a paddle and the auctioneer calls the number of the paddle. Once the timer goes off, the person representeed by final numbecalled out ends up winning the item up for bid.
Items given out included three firearms, 40 bottles of wine and several vacation packages.
"If it wasn't for the generosity of the people who donate those (prizes) and the people in attendance we wouldn't be able to offer all these scholarships to Northern students," Bennett said.
