While much of the sports world was focused on the first week on the NFL's Monday Night Football, the Havre High volleyball team was in Conrad. And the Blue Ponies made some Monday night headlines.
Under the direction of new head coach Tamecia Jarvis, the Ponies are a team on the rise, and after spending the previous weekend battling Class AA opponents, HHS flexed its muscle with a three-game sweep of the Cowgirls by the scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-17 Monday night in Conrad.
"Our blocking and coverage was awesome," Jarvis said. "We played together as a team the whole time, they (Havre) were fun to watch."
Havre looked to set the tempo early in the match after splitting with Conrad a season ago and the Ponies did just that thanks to four kills and an ace in the first game by Dani Wagner, which helped propel Havre to the six-point win in the opening game. Reggie Barnard and Megan Erickson also added two hits in the game.
In the second game, Havre continued to hit the ball well. The Ponies opened the match with 11 kills in the first set and in the second set, they matched that number, with three coming from Ceyara Plante, as well as a pair from Wagner and Claire Worm. Behind its strong hitting and three aces, the Ponies earned a 25-19 win, pushing Conrad to the brink of defeat.
And in what ended up being the final set, Havre once again dominated. Jacey McDonald had five kills in the set, to go along with four from Bernard and three from Wagner. Naomi Terry also pitched in with an ace as Havre closed out the match with an eight-point victory.
"The girls should feel good about themselves," Jarvis said. "But, we still have some work to do."
Wagner led the way for the Ponies with a team-high nine kills in the win, she also had three digs, one ace and 14 assists. McDonald also had a solid outing for HHS as she registered eight kills, while Bernard contributed with seven kills, three digs and two blocks. Erickson also added seven digs and four kills. Terry also added 10 assists and two aces.
The Ponies (2-1) will look to add to their win total Saturday, when they will take part in a pair of non-conference games against Hardin and Laurel in Lewistown.
