Fossil Festival comes back to Havre

The Fossil Festival started out as being for the Havre class of the '60s, but now all classes of Havre graduates are invited to the Great Northern Fairgrounds this weekend.

Cheryl Morse, Leonard and Marge Deppmeier and Kim Wirtzberger are all on the Havre Public Schools Education Foundation and have spearheaded the once-every-five-years event this year.

"The people who seem to enjoy it the most are the people who have been out of high school for 30 to 35 years," Morse said. "That seems to be the largest age group that attends and they seem to really, really enjoy it. The younger people are welcome, but they haven't been out of school as long, and they don't call themselves fossils like we do."

The live music will be put on by Havre graduates who have continued to play music past their high school careers.

Graduates from Havre High, Havre Central and all Hi-Line schools are invited.

The festivities begin today and anyone participating could register starting at 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. tonight. At 4 p.m., the bar will open at the Bigger Better Barn for people to start mingling and visiting. At 7 p.m., there will be live music until around midnight.

The festival continues Saturday with registration at 9 a.m. At 2 p.m., there's going to be a grandstand event to welcome visitors, sing school songs and go through a little school history, the bar opens at 4 p.m., the barbecue begins at 5 p.m. and at 7 the music starts.

Sunday is the last day and there will be cinnamon rolls and coffee from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Bigger Better Barn.
