It will be spring before the city of Havre can make repairs to the gaping hole on 3rd Street between 5th and 6th avenues.
The street collapsed into Bullhook, the creek that drains storm runoff through the city, in October 2013. The street has been closed off since then.
The city finally received a grant from the Treasure State Endowment Plan from the state Legislature this year, but by the time the money was allotted and the design work was done, the city decided it would be better to wait until spring to do the work, said Dave Peterson, the city's public works director.
The design work will be completed, and the city will be ready to go as soon as spring breaks, he said.
But they will have to wait until the runoff is complete, he said, to begin the actual work.
The emergency 3rd Street repairs are part of an overall project to bring the Bullhook work up to snuff. Several city streets above the creek are showing signs of problems, he said.
There are no problems with state-operated 5th Avenue, Peterson said, because it was totally reconstructed several years ago.
