Hi-Line Football Roundup: Bears roll defending Six-Man champs

There are few things more exciting than the start of the high school football season. And nothing, not even the smoky conditions that blanketed the state of Montana could damper that excitement this past weekend.

As far as the Hi-Line is concerned, the football season officially started last Friday night in Big Sandy, where the Pioneers played host to the North Star Knights in Six-Man North Division action.

A good crowd turned out for Big Sandy's home-opener, but in spite of that, the Knights dominated. Payton Peterson reached pay dirt three times for North Star, which cruised to a 41-0 victory.

The scoring started when Cade Chvilicek found Peterson in the end zone to put the Knights up 7-0. Then, touchdown runs by Peterson and Matthew Helmbrecht made the score 21-0 in favor of North Star at the end of the first quarter.

Yet, the Knights were far from finished as Helmbrecht hit Chvilicek in the end zone to make it 28-0. Then, Chvilicek hit Peterson again in the end zone to make the score 34-0 at the half. Gavin Spinler tacked on the final score with a spectacular touchdown run that made the final 41-0.

The Knights (1-0), will travel to Sunburst this Friday, while the Pioneers (0-1) will visit Heart Butte Saturday.

Chester/J-I 50, Fort Benton 0

As excited as all the high school football teams were to be back in action, no team could have been more pumped up than Fort Benton, which had to forfeit its entire 2014 season.

Yet, the Longhorns struggled in their return to varsity football as the Chester/J-I Hawks routed them by the score of 50-0 in Chester last Saturday.

All-State running back Justin May, showed why he should earn a third-straight selection this season as he totaled three touchdowns, including two in the first quarter, to put the Hawks up 21-0.

Cory Richter also scored a pair of touchdowns, one coming in the first quarter off of a pass from his brother Brandon Richter, and the other coming in the third quarter when he returned a punt for a score. Brandon Richter threw a pair of touchdown passes, while Brett Henke and Mitchell Ficher each scored in the win for C/J-I.

The game was called following the third quarter due to smoke.

The Hawks (1-0) will host Belt this Friday in an attempt to improve to 2-0 in Northern C 8-Man football. The Longhorns (0-1) will resume their schedule will their home-opener on Friday against Simms.

Box Elder 50, Geraldine-Highwood 6

The Box Elder Bears have been a popular playoff selection heading into the 2015 Six-Man season and yesterday, the Bears showed why as they went on the road and stunned defending Six-Man state champion Geraldine-Highwood by the score of 50-6.

The Bears roared out of the gate and grabbed the early lead thanks to an interception return for a touchdown by Shane Ketchum. Leading 6-0 after the first quarter, the Bears took control in the second as Brandon The Boy hooked up with Ketchum on touchdown passes of 21 and 49 yards to put Box Elder in front 18-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Bears blew the game wide open. Bodis Duran found pay dirt twice as a runner, as did Ketchum, who scored a total of five touchdowns. The Boy added another touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as he hit Pernell Morsette for the score and put a wrap on the Bears 44-point triumph.

The Bears (1-0) will look to keep their hot start going as they will travel to Valier Friday for another showdown with a North Division rival.
