Ponies off to a good start

With 18 holes of the Great Falls Invitational in the books, the 2015 Havre High golf season is officially underway.

Five Blue Pony boys and two HHS girls were in Great Falls Monday to play in the first round of the 2015 Great Falls Invite, which was held at Meadowlark Country Club.

And even with just three practices under their belt, the HHS boys are already looking like a top contender in the Class A ranks, even though the Ponies played against all Class AA competition Monday.

Pony junior Dustin Haas helped a consistent HHS team to a solid team score of 331 after he shot a team-best 79. That score was outstanding given the tough course and tough weather conditions Monday afternoon in Great Falls. But Haas, who is inside the Top 20 individually, had plenty of help, too, as Havre was bunched together in its scoring.

HHS senior Jerod Boles shot a round of 81, while junior Aden Passon shot 85, junior Kane Gabrielsen shot 86 and senior Jeff Miller finished with a round of 87. That type of consistency early in the season should only aid the Blue Ponies as the fall goes on. The Pony boys currently sit tied for seventh in the overall team standings.

Meanwhile, only two Pony girls made the trip to Great Falls, with senior Randi Gabrielsen carding a 100 and freshman Teagan Fee shooting 122 in her first high school golf tournament.

The 2015 Great Falls Invite continues today with 18 holes at the Eagle Falls Golf Course. Havre is back at home to host its own tournament Thursday at Prairie Farms Golf Course.
