Skylights sign star shooting guard

The time for the NAIA basketball season to start is not that far off in the distant future. And before it does, Montana State University-Northern head women’s coach Chris Mouat made one last roster move.

Mouat announced the recent signing of NCAA Division I transfer guard Tina Doughty (5-10) to an NAIA national letter of intent. Doughty comes to Northern after playing at both the University of New Mexico and most recently at Utah Valley State.

“Tina brings a lot of valuable experience,” Mouat said. “She is a skilled guard with good length and can play a number of positions on the floor. She has scored almost 600 points at the NCAA Division I level and will add depth to our perimeter.”

As a true freshman at the University of New Mexico, Doughty started in 11 games. At Utah Valley University, she was a regular starter and averaged 10.4 and 9.0 points per game in two seasons. For her career, she has shot 77 percent from the free-throw line and 31 percent from the 3-point line.

During her sophomore season at Utah Valley, Doughty earned Great West Conference Player of the Week honors after connecting on 8-of-10 3-point field goals. During her junior year, she set Utah Valley records for free throws attempted and made in a game, going 16 of 18. Doughty, a native of Granbury, Texas, played high school basketball for legendary coach Leta Andrews. Andrews is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and is the winningest high school coach in the nation. She retired in 2014 at the age of 76 after amassing 1,416 wins in 51 years of high school coaching. As a senior at Granbury High School, Tina averaged 21.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game while helping the Pirates to the third round of the Texas 4A playoffs.

“We are excited to have Tina in the Skylight program for her final season,” Mouat said. “She has played at a very high level and should make an immediate impact.”

Tina is the daughter of Todd and Pam Doughty. She plans on majoring in liberal studies at MSU-Northern.
