Soccer camp returns to Havre

Soccer has never been considered a major sport in the United States of America, but with the growth in popularity and participation over the past 20 years, it might soon rival other popular American sports.

There are currently more than 20 million people in the county playing soccer and the top professional league, Major League Soccer has started to see a significant increase in fan interest in recent years with the import of talented players from abroad as well as an increased development of talented American-born stars. Furthermore, the nation was struck with soccer fever again this summer as it watched the United States Women’s National team defeat the Japanese team on Canadian soil in the final of the 2015 FIFA World Cup to capture its first world championship in over a decade this past June.

Due to those facts, a case can be made that another soccer revolution is underway and that revolution will spread to Havre this week as the prestigious British Soccer Camp is back in town, starting today and running through Friday at the Havre High soccer fields.

The camp, which uses experienced soccer players from many different countries as counselors to teach the fundamentals of soccer, hosts players from the ages of three to 18. The Hi-Line United Soccer Club is responsible for bringing in the camp again as they extended an invitation to Challenger Sports to bring the camp back to Havre for another year following previous successes.

The kids who attend the camp get a multi-faceted experience that includes not only the basic fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting, defending and goalkeeping, but also provides a chance for the players to get out on the pitch and test what they’ve learned as well as giving them valuable experience in game situations.

The camp, which is regarded by many as the top soccer camp available in the USA and Canada is open to both boys and girls and will run for a few hours each day. The counselors travel across the country to administer the camp and follow a uniform curriculum that goes beyond just skills taught on the field.

The campers will spend the majority of their time learning soccer moves, but they are also taught things about the game itself as well as other things such as the basic principles of good sportsmanship.

Last year the camp had around 20 youths from Havre and the surrounding area turn out for the camp and the Hi-Line soccer club expects another good turnout this year. The British Soccer camp, which instructs thousands of soccer players altogether, has become an annual part of the August sports schedule in Havre and continues to help grow the sport along the Hi-Line with youth soccer as well as the Hi-Line United soccer teams becoming more and more popular.

Instruction at the camp begins today for the young footballers and will conclude on Friday.
