The Kellen Lund Memorial Bike Ride kicks off its annual ride this Saturday at Pepin Park.
The ride is to commemorate the passing of Kellen Lund, who was run over by a vehicle while walking at across the viaduct on 1st Street his bicycle some years ago. Jeri Zorn-Erickson is the main organizer of the event and said the bike ride should be just as good as it has been.
This year, they are giving away 15 bicycles. To win them, kids need just to sign their names on provided slips and put them in a container next to the bike they want. There will also be a couple of adult-sized bicycles.
There will be a barbecue free to participants. Bicycle helmets, donated by the International Association of Firefighters Local 601, will be handed out to kids who need them. Zorn-Erickson said there must be around 50 to 75 helmets that will be given out.
There will be two routes for the bike ride - a three-mile and a five-mile bike ride. The three mile ride gous up 6th Avenue, around Sunnyside Intermediate School and around Havre High School, then back down 6th Avenue.
The five-mile ride will go over to 14th Street up to Saddle Butte and the Baltrusch Trail, around the high school and then back down 6th Avenue.
Zorn-Erickson said she is still looking for volunteers to stand at intersection corners to ensure the riders will be safe. Those wanting to volunteer need show up at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Also held will be the slowest bike race, where whoever can go the slowest betwixt two cones without putting their feet on the ground wins, as well as a cone obstacle race.
Registration fbegins at 9 a.m. and the bike ride begins at 10:30 a.m.
