Damage estimated at $50,000
A fire fully took a residence's garage and two vehicles parked outside it around 5:30 this morning.
Firefighters received a call at 5:33 a.m. from the 600 Block of 2nd Avenue about a fire that had begun in a garage.
When the fire was extinguished, the garage was a total loss. Fire Chief Tim Hedges said there was about $30,000 worth of damage to the structure and $20,000 worth of damage to two vehicles parked next to the garage.
It took 10 firefighters to battle the blaze, he said. A power line running above the garage was burned and live on the structure. NorthWestern Energy was called to depower the line. Though the vehicles were not inside the garage, the doors of the garage were open and the flames totalled the vehicles.
The firemen had the fire contained within an hour, but stuck around for one or two more hours to "mop up the hot spots." This entails tearing down walls to get to smoldering charcoal or ashes that may rekindle the fire.
"You have to expose all those spots," Hedges said. "It takes a lot of time to do that - to make sure there's no possible source that can re-ignite or rekindle the fire."
As of this morning, what caused the flames is still up in the air, Hedges said. The garage had no power running to it, so it being an electrical fire is unlikely.
"We're doing some more investigation before we decide on a cause," he said.
