The Hill County 4-H continued a long tradition when it crowned its 2015 Teen and Queen at the Great Northern County Fair Thursday afternoon.
Skylar Powell, 16, of Honey Badgers 4-H and Ashley Hofland, 17, of Sunrise 4-H were officially announced as the new teen representatives for the organization at a ceremony in the Bigger Better Barn on the Great Northern Fairgrounds.
Friends and family sat in clusters on the bleachers, as the new young 4-H royalty stood in the middle of the show pen. Last year's queen presented Ashley with a rose, sachet and tiara, while Skylar was given a green vest, a jacket and box of tools.
Applicants for the teen and queen must fill out an application and go through an interview before being selected.
"It's kind of like a job," said Skylar, who has been with 4-H for the past 10 years.
Ashley says she looks forward to her time as queen, saying she predicts a fun year ahead. Skylar on the other hand was the subject of some light-natured ribbing by his friends when they found out he would be the teen representative, but now that he has assumed his new role he sees it as a positive.
"It ain't too bad," said Skylar. "I thought it could be worse, but I like it."
