Havre has two programs to assist children with meals during the summer months. One program is conducted by Havre Public Schools.
During a nine-week period, they provide free breakfast and lunch to youth 18 and under, each weekday.
In 2014, they served 2,087 breakfasts and 4,380 lunches at Lincoln-McKinley Promary School.
With the increase in numbers, HPS opened a second site at Highland Park Early Primary School for the summer of 2015.
This program is an important and valuable way to provide nutritional support for Havre children during the summer.
Also, for the past seven years, Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line has been serving lunch and afternoon snacks for children enrolled in the summer program. The first year, an average of 50 lunches a day were served and they now average 120 per day.
North Central Montana Transit has partnered with Boys & Girls Club to transport children to the summer program from various locations around town. In the first 12 days of the current year, there were 700 rides provided. This allows children the opportunity to enjoy a healthy meal for lunch and snack before returning home.
Tim Brurud, club director, said the club's mission is to "inspire, enable all young people to become productive, responsible caring citizens. We are a youth development organization."
The partnership between the club and the transit system benefits community children and is a convenience for parents whose children may not be able to attend the club if transportation were not available.
The transit system depends on local fundraising in the region to match state funds to cover a portion of their operational expenses. To support their fundraising efforts, NCMT is in need of letters of support detailing how riding the transit positively benefits individuals and communities in this region
Contributions to NCMT are appreciated whether these are monetary in nature or in the form of letters of support. Their address is NCMT, PO Box 80, Havre, MT 59501.
