Obituary - John Wallace Campbell

John Wallace Campbell, 86, longtime Gildford, Montana, resident and businessman, died Monday, July 6, 2015, in Chester, Montana.

John was born Oct. 24, 1928, to Monta and Jack Campbell in Denton, Montana. His family lived in Greenfield and Chester until finally settling in Gildford.

After graduating from Gildford High School, John attended college in Missoula and then in 1950 enlisted in the U.S. Army. John was stationed in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1952.

He returned to Gildford and purchased the local general store with his parents which they renamed "Campbell's Store." John managed this business until his retirement in 1985 at which time he became his mother's caregiver for many years.

John married Anne Heen in 1997, and they continued to make their home in Gildford until recently moving to Chester.

John was a civic-minded resident of Gildford serving many years as a volunteer fireman and was a founding member of the Gildford Water/Sewer Board which was instrumental in implementing the first community water system to its citizens. He was an active lifelong member of the First Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and served over 20 years as its treasurer.

John is survived by his wife, Anne Campbell; and Anne's children: Karen Reinertson, Linda Flegel, Knute Heen, Erik Heen and Inger Lemler, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Ardith (Glenn) Roush; nieces, Kay (Jake) Neil and Glenda (Brian) Armstrong; nephews, Ryan (Robin) Roush and Neal Roush; and eight grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's choice.

Services will be held Saturday, July 11, at 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Gildford. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial of ashes with military rites will be 1 p.m, Saturday afternoon at Highland Cemetery in Havre.
