Havre Daily News takes 9 state awards in Better Newspaper Contest

The Havre Daily News won nine awards at the Montana Newspaper Association's annual Better Newspaper Contest.

The results were announced at the association's convention at Big Sky Resort south of Bozeman Saturday night.

Former page designer Calbe Hutchins won a first-place award in page design for his design work on a Hi-Line Living feature story in "Gnarly Times in Big Sandy," a story about a skateboarding festival sponsored by Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament.

Publisher Stacy Mantle took second place in the best front page contest for design on "Four things to do over Thanksgiving."

The Havre Daily News also finished first in the best website category.

Sports Editor George Ferguson captured a second-place award in the best sports story category for "Blue Blue," about Havre High School's state championship girls basketball win, and third place for "Heavyweight Win," a story about Montana State University-Northern's heavyweight wrestler Toby Cheff's upset victory over David Lopez of the University of Great Falls.

Ferguson was second place in headline writing for a collection of headlines.

Reporter John Paul Schmidt took a second-place prize in lifestyle coverage for a Hi-Line story "Vinyl is not dead."

Managing editor John Kelleher won third place in best editorial for a collection of editorials.

Mantle took second place in the best front page contest for design on "Four things to do over Thanksgiving."
