After an extended break at the start of their season, the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team returned to action this past Saturday with mixed results.
The North Stars played in their first Northern A district game Saturday when they traveled to Great Falls for a doubleheader against the Great Falls Electrics. In the opening game, the North Stars got the best of the Electrics, defeating them 6-2. But in Game Two, Great Falls even the scored and avoided the sweep and knocking off Havre by the score of 6-2.
In the opening game of the two-game set between the North Stars and Electrics, Great Falls jumped ahead early with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 2-0. Yet, In the top of the third, Havre got on the board after Jerod Boles reached base on a walk and later scored a passed ball to make it 2-1.
Havre held the Electrics scoreless in the third and fourth innings, and finally in the top of the fifth inning, the North Stars got their bats going. Trey Murphy, Travis Roth and Jake Sedhal all singled in the inning. Then, Murphy scored on an error by the Chargers and Ryne Antley tripled to score Roth and Sedhal, which put the North Stars in front 4-2. Tyrell Pierce then drove in Antley with a single that capped a four-run inning and gave Havre a 5-2 advantage.
Yet, the Electrics bounced back, too, with runs in the bottom half of the fifth to get within just one run at 5-4. But again, Murphy singled to lead off the inning and was later driven in by Sedhal, who doubled to left field to give the North Stars an insurance run at 6-4.
Dylan Carpenter, who earned the win by allowing four runs on nine hits with four strike outs, closed out the game by holding the Electrics scoreless over the last two innings to preserve the victory.
Sedhal, who catches for Havre, had a stellar day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Antley and Roth each added two hits apiece in the win as did T.J. Lovenguth and Murphy, who led the team with two runs scored.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Electrics controlled the game start to finish. Great Falls plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning and held that lead until Roth belted a two-run double in the fifth inning to trim the lead to 4-2. Yet, Great Falls added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to salt away with win.
Antley was hit with the loss for Havre after surrendering five runs on seven hits in just over four innings of work. Boles came to pitch the final three innings and allowed just one run and one hit in relief. No North Star managed more than one hit in the game and in addition to Roth’s double, the only other extra base hits came from Pierce and Brenden Danielson, although neither produced any runs.
With the split, the North Stars improved to 2-2 on the season overall and are now 1-1 in conference play. Havre also split with Medicine Hat Sunday in a Northern A double header in Medicine Hat. The results of that game will be in Tuesday’s edition of the Havre Daily News.
The North Stars will then turn around and participate in the North Star jamboree, which begins Thursday and continues through Sunday. All games will be held at Legion Field.
