Havre Trails met Monday to discuss the successes of their 5K Walk/Run and talk about future projects.
Erin Bradshaw, the treasurer of the group, said the event drew more than 100 community members out to the Bill Baltrusch Nature Trail to participate in the event and, all told, it raised more than $1,000 for the group’s community projects, after the overhead was paid.
The group also spoke of the hike they are taking out to Saddle Butte Sunday and the possibility of travelling around Montana to other events and other similar groups’ hikes.
Havre Trails will know if they will receive funding from Fish, Wildlife and Parks by the end of June or beginning of July. The grant should be around $15,000 to $20,000 and would be used for the planned project to renovate U.S. Bank Park.
“It sounds like a lot, but you’d be surprised,” Bradshaw said, adding that the money would quickly be used on construction.
Jonathan Klein, a local Boy Scout looking to earn his Eagle rank, spoke to the group again about the possibility of using some of the park for an enclosed dog park. The park would be a place for people in the area to take their dogs and let them loose in a gated area with other dogs.
After some conversation, the group asked Klein to look more into costs of the materials needed for the park and to find a location in the park where he would want to build.
The city of Havre owns the U.S. Bank Park and though there is a trail on it, it is not maintained.
