North Stars split with Glasgow Reds

Havre baseball fans get treated to a pair of pitchers' duals at Legion Field

On opening day of the 2015 Havre North Stars American Legion baseball season, the offense of both the North Stars and the Glasgow Reds was far from midseason form. And because of that, and some stellar hurling from both teams, fans were treated to a pair of pitchers’ duals at Legion Field Sunday in Havre.

The opening game, which featured younger players playing for both sides, went in favor of the North Stars as they knocked off Glasgow 4-2. But, in the second game of the double dip, the Reds pitching staff was lights out in a 1-0 victory.

“In the first game, the young guys came in and contributed and did what they were supposed to do,” North Stars head coach Dick Fuzesy said. “We had minimal errors in both games. We didn’t shoot ourselves in the foot so that was good. And like I said, pitching was our strength and it was our strength today.”

In the first game against the Reds, Fuzesy sent Brenden Danielson to the hill and was not disappointed as Danielson tossed four shutout innings, in which he allowed just one hit and two total base runners. He also walked just one and struck out six to earn the win.

And while Danielson shut down the Reds from the start, the North Stars gave him a lead early as Jeff Miller reached base on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball to give Havre a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, with the score still 1-0, T.J. Lovenguth got on base with a single, then stole second and scored on another passed ball to put Havre up 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Lovenguth scored again after hitting a single to right field, but this time he was knocked in by Trey Hanson, who ripped an RBI single to give the North Stars a 3-0 advantage.

Glasgow notched a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to trim the Havre lead down to 3-2, but the North Stars responded in the bottom half of the inning as Travis Roth singled to score Trey Murphy, which gave Havre a 4-2 cushion going into the seventh and final inning.

Dylan Carpenter, who relieved Danielson in the fifth inning, had some difficulty in the sixth but struck out two of the final three batters he faced to preserve the win for the North Stars.

“Brenden came in and did a nice job for us in the first game,” Fuzesy said. “And then Dylan came in there in the fifth inning and did a good job for us the rest of the way.”

In the second game, the North Stars sent their ace, Tyrell Pierce to the mound and he did not disappoint, in fact both teams got great performances out of their pitching. Pierce threw a complete game in defeat and surrendered just one run on five hits. Glasgow, on the other hand, had four pitchers that combined to one-hit the North Stars.

Over the course of the game, Havre got just three base runners. Lovenguth reached on an error, while Pierce drew a walk. Yet, Lovenguth and Pierce were left stranded. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, with Havre down 1-0, following a Glasgow run in the top of the fourth, Murphy hit a single to right field to break up the no-hitter. But again, the North Stars failed to bring him home and in the bottom of the seventh, Sedhal, Pierce and Carpenter struck out ending the game.

“Glasgow has some really good pitching,” Fuzesy said. “But it was good for our guys to see that. Tyrell, he did a great job today. He’s our horse and he pitched well enough to win, we just couldn’t get anything going. But, we also aren’t going to see a lot of pitching like that, so it was a good learning experience. But, I’m really proud of the kids, they played hard and they competed.”

The North Stars (1-1) will now set their sights on the Great Falls Electrics, whom they will take on this Sunday in Great Falls in Northern A district action.
