People will get a chance to learn about Havre's history by experiencing it in living color during the annual Living History Day Saturday, June 6, when Havre's local history exhibits will bring their attractions to life.
The event is sponsored by the Tourism Committee of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce.
People can tour the once grandest and largest military post in Montana and the U.S., Fort Assinniboine, June 6, 10 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Visitors can check out the display of hides and guns. Each hour a cannon shot will be fired.
A special rate of $5 per adult and $3 for 18 and under is being offered for the day. Tours on the Black Jack touring wagon will be on the half hour.
Havre Beneath the Streets underground tours will bring to life some of Havre's former businesses. People can take the tour and see the Old West at its best in the Sporting Eagle Saloon. shop at Gourley Brothers Bakery and purchase a tasty homemade pastry made fresh. People hungry from the tour can get a meat sample from Havre's Meat Market or satisfy a sweet tooth with a choice of old-fashion penny candy available to buy at Holland and Son Mercantile. Saturday's tours will start at 9 a.m. and will run every half hour, with the last tour at 4 p.m. Appointments for tours are welcomed.
A special rate of $8 a person will be offered for tours June 6.
The Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum will showcase the long history of the railroad in the Hi-Line area. For Living History Day, the club members will be running the trains on two different tracks, for visitors to watch and enjoy. The running of the trains will be free to visitors.
Then people can head on up to the buffalo jump behind Holiday Village Mall to take a walk further back in history. Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump allows visitors to view artifacts in their natural state. Buffalo jump tours will take place from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. A stone boiling cooking demonstration will take place from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. next to the Interpretive Center. Tours will be given at a special reduced rate of $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $4 for students.
The H. Earl Clack Museum will participate in Havre's Living History Day by inviting all to visit its unique dinosaur display. The museum is a participating member of the Montana Dinosaur Trail. While at the museum learn about dinosaurs once living in the area as well as about the Dinosaur Trail passport and the opportunity to explore other trail stops this summer. The museum will be open from noon to 6 p.m.
High Line Heritage House Museum will be participating in Living History with a presentation about the Juneberry. Visitors will learn of its importance after each tour and enjoy free, homemade Juneberry mini muffins. The museum is at 132 3rd St.
