Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

Laurel — Agriculture is still the biggest industry in Hill County, and the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce celebrates the business annually with an Ag Appreciation Dinner. This year, it will be held in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of MSU’s Northern Ag Research Center. The Chamber is looking for nominations for the annual ag leader and ag advocate awards that are handed out. There should be no shortage of good candidates for both awards. So many people have played an important role in the development of farming and ranching along the Hi-Line. Help the Ag Committee come up with some great people. Submit your nominations.

Dart — Too often the wrecking ball has been employed as the first solution to problems involving old buildings in Havre and the Hi-Line. Too many buildings that could have been saved became victims of the wrecking ball. This is National Preservation Month. May this be a time we consider other alternatives than demolition. It would be great if future generations could enjoy some of the fine structures we have in town today.

Laurel — Hi-Line Tavern Association raised $1,500 during its recent putting tournament. They immediately turned around and donated the money to charities, My Neighbor In Need and the Shriners for use by their children’s hospitals. Each of the organizations got $750.

Laurel — Postal workers will be delivering mail and collecting food on Saturday. People are asked to leave food in bag at their mailboxes on Saturday. Postal workers will pick it up and deliver it to the Havre Food Bank. The economy is getting better? People in social services agencies can tell you there are lots of exceptions to that rule The food bank is in need of food. They especially are looking for peanut butter, canned fruit and canned vegetables. Be generous in your donations.
