Chinook girls back on top of 9C track

The Chinook girls track team has been a force to be reckoned with all season long and that was the case again Wednesday at the 9C District meet, where the Beeters came away with the team championship.

The Sugarbeeters didn’t run away with the team title at the Havre Middle School Track, but they did score 157 points, nine more than second-place North Star’s 148 to take home team honors. Fort Benton earned itself a trophy by finishing third with 116 points, while fourth went to Big Sandy with 31.

“Winning the district is a pride thing for any team,” Chinook head coach Paula Molyneaux said. “You want to try to take home a trophy and that’s what you strive for all year. So they will feel very good about that and after that we talk about the individual stuff.”

In order to rack up the points necessary to win, the Beeters spent a ton of time on the trophy stand and no one from Chinook was up there more than Brittany Nelson, who swept all three throwing events. She won the shot put with a throw of 37-06, the discus with a throw of 119-05 and the javelin with a throw of 103-10.

Abigail Ellison also had a stellar day for the Beeters, winning the triple jump with a jump of 32-06.75, while also finishing third in the high jump and fourth in the long jump. Hannah Weber contributed plenty of points to the effort, winning the 1,600 meter run with a time of 6:05.9 and finishing second in the 800.

The other Chinook athletes who went home with first-place ribbons were Kelsey Mathon in the high jump after jumping 6-0 and Taylor Neibauer, who won the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.00. Neibauer also notched a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles. Kailey Kleinjan added a second-place finish in both the 100 and 200 and Katelyn Neibauer was third in the 400.

The Beeters also took home first place in the 400 relay with a team that consisted of Weber, Kleinjan, Katelyn Neibauer and Taylor Neibauer.

“The kids performed really well today, I was pleased with them,” Chinook head coach Paula Molyneaux said. “We had some kids that had to take some tests this morning so we were missing some points. But, the kids showed up and picked up some extra events and they really showed a lot of heart today.

“Brittany Nelson picking up three firsts for us was huge and Kailey Kleinjan getting a couple of seconds was also huge,” She added. “And the rest of them contributed, like Abi in the jumps, Kelsey in the jumps. So it was a total team effort.”

Chinook may have won the team event, but there were a couple of individuals who stole the show and one of them was North Star senior Tylynn Rettig, who was outstanding in her final District 9C meet. Rettig won a total of four events — the pole vault, the long jump, the 100 and the 200 and also finished second in the triple jump.

Retting won the pole vault with a vault of 6-00 and the long jump after jumping 16-00.75 feet. She won the 100 with a time of 12.96 and the 200 with a time of 27.03.

"I feel really good about how things went, and we also did really well as a team and it was good that everyone pitched in for us,” Rettig said. “Since it was my last meet, I really wanted to do well and I was really focused.”

In addition to Rettig’s stellar day, Kaitlyn Bird also stood out in her first 9C meet winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.7. She won in the 400 with a time of 1:05.92 and the 800 with a time of 2:34.2. Additionally, she helped Fort Benton win the 1,600 relay and finish second in the 400 relay. The Longhorns got another first-place finish from Kimberly Taylor, who won the 3,200 with a time of 14:07.9 and also managed to finish fourth in the 1,600.

All the individuals who placed in the top six will advance to the Northern C divisional meet, which will take place next Thursday in Great Falls.
